Windows Mobile 7 slated for release in 2010, closer integration with OEMs

IT Pro got some quotes from Microsoft‘s business marketing manager, James McCarthy, talking a bit about Windows Mobile 7 and confirming that there are indeed different chassis (see the specs here) being worked on with OEMs:

“Steve Ballmer has mentioned publicly that Windows Mobile 7 is slated for release in 2010 and we’re always working with our key OEM and operator partners on future products, although we have nothing formal to announce for now.”

“In the future, we are looking to deepen our development work with a handful of key OEMs at the hardware design phase, with much more carefully defined hardware specifications to match software requirements, which in turn will deliver even more powerful mobile experiences for our customers.”

“This has led to this chassis’ concept that is familiar to the work Microsoft does with hardware partners in the PC industry to create high quality products.”

Well if they could hurry up a little bit…

So it begins….

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 to be SE’s last Windows Mobile device ?

This is according to Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin who posted the following on Twitter :

SE denied to support WM in future, X2 possible the last one WM device (one more in development but could be canceled).Sales forecast is bad

Next year SE will show 4 android phones, 3-4 S60 phones. I prefer HTC over Android phones, S60 isnt so bad

If this is true, SE is in part ot blame for this. The massive delay of the X1 really killed it and the fact the the X2 is basically just an X1 with a higher res camera doesn’t help their case. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 7 delay is another factor IMO. Take this news with a grain of salt though. But remember that we already know that the X3 is running Android.

Palm Pixi announced, shown on video. Does it suck….?

It’s all about the low-end devices lately. After HTC’s newly announced Touch 2 and Tattoo it’s time for Palm to unveil their entry level WebOS smartphone, the Pixi. What can I say… lets see, WebOS (great) it’s got a tiny 2.63″ 320×400 capacitive touch screen (geat resolution but too small), Qwerty keyboard (good) 8Gb of internal memory(great), Qualcomm MSM 7627 Chipset (what !? So the Pre has a Cortex8 cpu + OGL ES 2.0 gpu and this thing has an old as hell ARM11+OGL ES 1.0 GPU? way to go Palm!), 2Mpx fixed focus camera with led flash (bad) and finally I kept the best for the end…..NO WIFI! Oh well , at least it looks cute and is really light & thin…It will be exclusive to Sprint and should be available for in time for Christmas (around $99).
Check out the hands on action here.

New Windows Mobile 6.5 builds leaking, still ugly as sin

Looks like the XDA folks are a happy bunch, thanks to all these new Windows Mobile 6.5 builds hitting the web nearly every week. Redmondpie posted what’s new in the 23045 build leaked on HTCPedia:

-Text-based buttons on the bottom bar are now replaced by icon-based buttons which makes the experience look good, and more finger friendly than ever before.
-Almost all issues with fonts and pictures in Titanium have been fixed.
-Improved memory management.
-Faster and more responsive.
-Numerous other bug fixes.

I don’t want to hurt the WM6.5′ Team’s feeling or anything, but this thing still looks ugly. When is Microsoft going to stop the madness (polishing WM6.X etc) and allocate all their developers to Windows Mobile 7? I mean HTC and all other ODMs are going to slap their own UI on top of this anyway. So why bother with the misplaced icons etc? Redmond we have a problem, you need to talk to us. Is WM7 delayed again ? Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait to get my hands on phones like the HTC Leo.But it would be so much better it didn’t have to run an OS with a prehistoric kernel..
