Looks like the Sony Ericssondidn’t forget the handful (or maybe less…) of Xperia X2 users and released the promised MR1 Windows Mobile 6.5.2 update today. To grab it you’ll just have to SE’s Update service here. The MR1 update supposedly includes video calling, improved GPS performance and FM Radio access (it wasn’t enabled before?).

Sony Ericsson have just announced the future upgrade path of the Xperia X2. As you already know the handset will ship with Windows Mobile 6.5 but unlike the X1 the company is now promising several updates in the months following the availability of the product:
In March, we’ll launch our first upgrade (MR1). It will upgrade Windows Mobile from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2 (which will improve both the stability and usability of the device), it will bring in the use of video telephony, an FM radio and it will introduce fast GPS to get a quicker fix. As well as all this, MR1 will upgrade a lot of the applications in the phone to improve speed, usability and fix any bugs we find.
The second update will go live in May and this will be a big one as it moves Windows mobile onto 6.5.3. This is a significant upgrade in terms of usability, performance, power management and the browser experience.
That’s the extent of our plans at the moment but I’ll update this post as we make any more decisions.
(ps. Before anyone asks, no it won’t ever go onto Windows Mobile 7, it won’t support the hardware.)
Frankly I didn’t expect SE to do this. So, kudos to them for supporting the product especially after all the delays.

PhoneArena posted their review of the much delayed Xperia X2 Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone a couple days ago. To make it short, lets say that they weren’t impressed at all. this shouldn’t come as a surprise given the specs of the device compared to its predecessor the X1 (it has the same specs besides the upgraded camera and slightly bigger screen..). The fact the Sony Ericsson isn’t marketing the device at all (they are pushing hard behind the Xperia X10 instead) doesn’t really inspires confidence in the product… Check the video after the break.

Looks like yesterday’s rumor is being somewhat confirmed today by Sony US. The Xperia X2a (notice the “a”) is now showing up on Sony’s US website, leading us to belive that the device is finally going to launch in North Ameraica (but when?). Check it out here.

According to Pocketnow, Sony Ericsson is pushing the back the release of the Xperia X2 as is only expected to launch it this summer.
I was able to shake loose from a Sony rep. Apparently the X2, which has been recently dumped from Vodafone’s future line up, will be sold unlocked starting this summer at Sony Style stores. The unlocked version will work on AT&T 3G, but probably not T-Mobile. No word on price, but a $500-$600 range makes sense.
I’m sure that this is only related to the US launch date. THe X2 is already availalbe in the UK here eventhough it has been dropped by Vodafone this week.
You may remember that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 was initially supposed to launch on Vodafone UK in November and then got pushed back to January 2010. Well, according to WMPoweruser :
In an e-mail circulated internally yesterday, staff were told the handset will no longer be sold by the carrier.
Nice job Sony Ericsson ! Oh well, I guess that the X2 was too little too late, especially compared to the Xperia X10.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 delay I reported a few days ago has been confirmed today. According to Sony Ericsson:
X2 to be launched in January
Hi All – Over the last couple of weeks there has been a few, OK more than a few rumours that the X2 is going to be delayed until January and I’m sure it will not come as a surprise when we say that these are well founded.
The software worked fine but when we started integrating it with some of the network specific apps it threw up a few issues which we’re working to fix.
It’s all minor tweaks really (extending the battery life and speeding up aspects of the software), but we want to be sure that when we ship this it is as good as it should be and that you don’t have to constantly upgrade the software as we iron out these wrinkles.
So… we’re launching first week of January. Really sorry if you were looking forward to getting hold of one before then but it will be worth it when we get there.
Thanks for your continued interest in the site.
Too little too late, sorry Sony Ericsson…Hopefully the Xperia X3 will come out on time.

Paul from Modaco just uploaded a 26 minutes long video walkthrough of Sony Ericsson‘s latest Windows Mobile 6.5 phone, the Xperia X2:
Too little too late…
Well it looks like Sony Ericsson didn’t learn from their mistake withe the original Xperia X1 last year. According to Vodoafone UK’s onlie shop the X2 is now scheduled to launch in January 2010 instead of November as it was previously announced . Let’s hope that they don’t start to blame Windows Mobile this time around…

There’s been a lot of talk about Sony Ericsson‘s first Android phone the X10 lately but don’t forget that another Xperia devices about to launch, the X2. It definitely looks like SE’s wants to quietly kill this product, making it Dead On Arrival especially given that it’s probably their last Windows Mobile phone. Sad isn’t it?
Tracy & Matt posted the following unboxing video:
Sony Ericsson’s latest Windows Mobile device is about to be launched in Europe so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Xperia X2′s user manual found it’s way to the internet. XDA-devs user Gtrab received the phone four days ago and posted a couple of videos on YouTube:

Sony Ericsson’s latest (and probably last) Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone the Xperia X2 has hit the FCC who in turn leaked the devices user manual that you can download here. Still no word one when the phone is goign to be avaialbe in the US (if ever). It is normaly launching next month in Europe.

According to Vodafone’s own wevsite Sony Ericsson’s Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone the Xperia X2 should be availalbe in the UK next month, there’s no word on the price though. Remember that the X2 may be SE’s second & last Windows Mobile phone ever if the latest speculations are to be believed.
Well this wouldn’t come as a surprise given Sony Ericsson‘s utter lack of marketing support towards the Xperia X2 (and the months of delay & prohibitive pricing of the Xperia X1). But this is all analyst talk so this is as good as anybodies guess (well it’s usually far worst given the lack of understanding of the subject they are talking about half of the time). SE’s CEO Bert Nordberg just said during a conference call that they are getting ready to announce a new strategy (maybe before the end of the year with the announcement of the Xperia X3 Android smartphone?). Lets wait and see…

We reported yesterday hat the X2 was going to be priced around €600 without a contract, unfortunately it looks like it’s true. According to Mobinaute who got to talk with Sony Ericsson in France, the Xperia X3 should be available there in November for €600 without contract.
Sony Ericsson précise que le Xperia X2 sera commercialisé en France en novembre avec un système Windows Mobile 6.5 pour un prix de 600 euros hors subvention opérateur.
Last we heard, SE was expecting poor sales of the newly announced Xperia X2. Well here’s a tip for them, don’t price your phone at €590-€600. According to a Sony Ericsson rep who answered Solopalmari.com this is going to be the price of the device without a contract.

The boys at Phone Arena did a little 4 pages hands on preview of what is rumored to be SE’s last WinMo phone, the Xperia X2 running Windows Mobile 6.5. Lots of pictures and info so check it out.

This is according to Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin who posted the following on Twitter :
SE denied to support WM in future, X2 possible the last one WM device (one more in development but could be canceled).Sales forecast is bad
Next year SE will show 4 android phones, 3-4 S60 phones. I prefer HTC over Android phones, S60 isnt so bad
If this is true, SE is in part ot blame for this. The massive delay of the X1 really killed it and the fact the the X2 is basically just an X1 with a higher res camera doesn’t help their case. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 7 delay is another factor IMO. Take this news with a grain of salt though. But remember that we already know that the X3 is running Android.

SE has already released a new SDK for developers who wish to develop panels for the new Windows Mobile 6.5 Xperia X2 smartphone (they should also work on the original X1 given that they have the same specs..). Included in the SDK is a new tool called the Panelizer. theis tool lets you turn any native app, Flash, Java ME and Project Capuchin into a panel. Starting mid-September, devs can choose to make their panels availble on SE’s PlayNow Arena Marketplace. One has to wonder why HTC has never released any SDK for their phones (SE & Samsung did)
XPERIA™ X2 is the latest phone in Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA™ range. It will be one of the first phones to market based on Windows Mobile® 6.5 Professional and features an eye-catching user interface that includes a new range of interactive Panels on the home screen, offering business, fun and communication features. Users can easily select and download Panels from PlayNow™ arena, Sony Ericsson’s one-stop content store which also offers music, movies, themes and a whole lot more.
New Panelizer tools in the Sony Ericsson Panel SDK for X2 make it easy for developers to maximize investment in existing applications. In just a few clicks, existing content including native apps, Flash, Java ME and Project Capuchin can be turned in to a Panel. It’s also simple to create HTML panels.
The Panelizer SDK also enables developers to create native applications and make use of powerful 3D graphics because the XPERIA™ X2 features support for OpenGL® ES 1.1. XPERIA™ X2 is also equipped with a Java Runtime that makes Java/Capuchin applications run as well integrated as native applications.
“Putting developers’ applications directly in front of consumers is a crucial focus for us,” says Christopher David, Head of Developer and Partner Engagement at Sony Ericsson. “We created the Panel SDK to streamline the development process, minimising the time it takes to get applications directly to the consumer and providing developers with additional revenue opportunities.”
From mid-September 2009, developers will be able to submit Panels to PlayNow™ arena, which operates in 18 countries and offers a 70% net revenue share. From submission to sale takes less than 30 days for accepted Panels, and verification/signing can be delayed until after Sony Ericsson has reviewed the application.
