Manually update the Samsung Omnia 7 Firmware to Mango

As you probably already know I was one of the few people who was running the leaked T-Mobile RC1 Mango firmware on my Samsung Omnia 7. Unfortunately this resulted in me being stuck with it and not being able to get the official firmware via the normal channel (Zune software/device notification). The only solution I had left was to flash by device back to a NoDo package and then wait or force today’s Mango update on it. Well, I didn’t want to loose any of my data or waste that much time so I tried something else. I grabbed the Samsung Firmware package (thanks to the brave soul who sent it to me) which is a simple CAB file and sent it to my Omnia 7 plugged into my PC. Voila, I now have the latest bits on my phone in less than 10 mins without loosing anything.

All you have to to is:

- Download the firmware here (remember that’s not the OS but only the firmware bits) then download the WPupdate tools from here.
- Unzip the Tools in a folder then unzip the firmware in the same folder as the tools.
- Plug in your device, wait until the Zune client starts and then close it.
- Run the the Updater and press S or B (depending on the size of your balls..)
- your phone will then reboot in download mode and update (don’t unplug it or do stupid things with your PC during the whole process..)

- Firmware version is now: 2424.11.8.5
- Radio Software version : 2424.11.7.2
- Bootloader: 5.8.1.9

Update: Yes this is the I8700XXKH5 PDA part. Only use this method if you are unable to receive the firmware update after the OS update I’M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG!

UPDATE October 15th: I’ve uploaded the latest I8700XXXKI3 Firmware here.

Enjoy your tropical fruit…

  • http://twitter.com/Quickos Grant Quick

Noticed this on a couple of posts – the Radio Software version is not: 2424.11.27.2, it’s 2424.11.7.2 (you’ve got an extra ’2′).

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

oops thanks for noticing the typo :)

  • http://twitter.com/Quickos Grant Quick

No worries – you had me panicked that I wasn’t up to date for a minute! By the way, it’s the same typo here: http://bit.ly/nqeGq7 ;)

  • Arthur Malachevsky

Can i use this tutorial for my Omnia7 16GB from tmo de, but officially not locked (and i live not in Germany)? My phone is free for carrier, so i use it in another country. Anyway firmware will send tmo de, or smbd else?

  • http://twitter.com/ErrorholicDev Errorholic

firsto of all i have an error on that process.. next i want to flash kc1 i have kh2 as you know from tmobile but i can’t flash any firmware on download mode the windows phone downloader does not found the usb when i connect it.. can you test if is your is ok or the new bootloader have problem?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

My best advise would be for you to wait for the official push to your phone. Normally the force trick you get things done: http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2011/03/28/force-the-nodo-update-on-the-samsung-omnia-7/. What I posted here is mainly for people who are for some strange reasons not receiving the Firmware update after they received the OS update. But yeah it should work on any Omnia 7 as long as your bootloader allows it.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

What error are you getting ? Your only solution regarding the wonky bootloader on you TMO firmware is the USB trick thing (can’t remember the name right now, you need to solder some connector on a usb plug etc..or buy one on Ebay).

Did you at least get the OS update via Zune ?

  • http://twitter.com/Rafyelzz Rafael Muñoz

I do, same situation, and im gonna try :S

  • Willem

I was the other few running the T-Mobile one and just decided my balls are big. No backup, just update. One q however. Will this bring it back to the retail OS or will it still have a developer stamp? In other words, will it get future updates automatically again?

  • http://twitter.com/Rafyelzz Rafael Muñoz

Updating, and I’ve to be honest, i’m terrified. Pressed S

  • Errorholic

ok i found solution jump from laptop to my pc and now working.. (on laptop) mango dev tools always making problems in connection… i think for stopping jailbreaking… on my pc i have the old dev tools os 7

  • http://twitter.com/Rafyelzz Rafael Muñoz

phiuuf. Who needs puenting when you have an expensive smartphone to play with and risk to brick.

FW Updated succesfully on a 16GB Omnia 7

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Well my guess is that everything should normally work afterwards (updates etc..) but between now and then (Tango) numerous Omnia 7 firmwares will probably leak (one is leaking tomorrow and branded SFR for France) so there should be a problem (you can always go back and forth and see how things pan out later on…)

  • http://www.news4mobiles.de Peter W.

I used this method for my German Omnia 7 without Branding and now its Dead…doesnt boot anymore :(

    How to fix it?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IOBKQU34HUFLOKYSAMGBUBCSLM Nate

I did the same thing with my Omnia 7 and same thing, it doesn’t boot past the initial “Samsung Omnia 7″ Graphic. Update process completed but it stopped on the restart and didn’t go any further. Eventually I got a “phone restart error” on the computer.

I can get the phone into download mode now but the computer can’t recognise it. Any help, please? Thanks

  • Marco

Just run again the tool and select Restore ;)

  • Marco

Just updated Italian Omnia 7 8GB. All OK!!

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Just in case…did you try to boot after pulling the battery out and back in. This usually fixes the problem. You can also try to restore it using the same tool (if you chose the B option… but try it anyway). Or simply flash one of the previously leaked firmwares (do a search here and you should find them) if you can go into download mode.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IOBKQU34HUFLOKYSAMGBUBCSLM Nate

Thanks for the fast responses…the computer isn’t recognising the phone now, it says “Error, no devices found” in the update programme. I also tried to connect the phone after I had put it into download mode but the computer (win 7) is trying to find a driver for “Samsung CDMA Technologies” and fails after. Hmmm….

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

First make sure that the Zune client isn’t running before running the updater. Second try to get the latest Samsung usb drivers from here : http://hotfile.com/dl/109276666/f22355e/SAMSUNG_USB.rar.html

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Check my replies to Nate below.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IOBKQU34HUFLOKYSAMGBUBCSLM Nate

Got the drivers (thanks) and they’re installed. I am connected in download mode now but it still won’t recognise it. I did do a backup…any other way to get that onto it? Thanks

  • http://www.news4mobiles.de Peter W.

Thanks, now its working again…Restore did it

  • Mhmighty

when I try this it says error, update failed: two or more packages in the update contain the same file

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IOBKQU34HUFLOKYSAMGBUBCSLM Nate

Ahhh sorry I am new at this. I believe I can download an earlier version of the firmware and get it on there with the WP7 Downloader as I can still get into download mode. I’ll try that tomorrow if you agree (?). BTW this is a locked device, not sure if that makes any difference at this point? Cheers for the help.

  • Epilefnalber

Perfect, no problems at all!! but how can I be sure i’ve got the “official” update??

  • Lynchi

So I have an unlocked, Deutche Telekom Samsung Omnia 7, (network unlocked but still has t-mobile branding on start up etc ..)

What is the best way of quickly official mango ? Should i flash to the RTM Mango (if so where is a tutorial ?) then upgrade through zune ? Or because it is carrier unlocked does this mean the update should come through if I force Zune to (i.e. killing internet when update is clicked) ?

I am also a registered student dev, so have got access to mango beta etc ..
    Cheers

  • Lynchi

Forgot to say, currently running NoDo

  • transatlanticism123

Im running a Deutsche Telekom Samsung Omnia 7 16GB model as well. Are they planning on updating it because I’ve read in some posts that they arent planning on updating it.. Should I just flash a fresh clean rom? :|

  • Lynchi

In the same boat, should we flash the RTM 7720, or the mango version that t-mobile put out ? Or because we have unlocked phones will they get mango update ..

  • Maloo

I’ve got the same problem, and all I’m after is the latest diagnosis app (included in the cab) to rebrand my phone to get future firmware updates properly.

  • transatlanticism123

There isn’t even a timeline release out for the Omnia 7s on the Where’s My Update page as scheduled or still testing.. Dunno how long I can wait

  • Sebastian Fiore

But can you use the dlna app with your configuration?

  • http://twitter.com/Bigsro Alex Sromek

Looks like the ‘wheres my update page’ has been updated and all the Euro telcos are pushing the update out….EXCEPT for the Omnia 7. Good job Samsung…hehe

Awesome – I knew us Omnia 7 owners would be waiting longer than everyone else for Mango

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Florian-Caro/652326635 Florian Caro

What is the version of this Rom ? Is it KH5 like the rom leaked by Samfirmware ?

  • Mikkel

Hi, my phone is stuck with the Samsung Omnia7 splashscreen. When i try to restore/reflash the phone it says “Error: No devices were found.” Is the phone bricked now, or is there a solution to this issue?

    -Mikkel

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

As long as you can boot in Download mode you should be able to flash any firmware on it and get it back to life.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

    Yes it’s KH5.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Solution: Boot it in Download Mode and try flashing the latest leaked Firmware (or anyone firmware)? http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2011/09/28/new-samsung-omnia-7-mango-firmware-leaked-i8700xxkh5/

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Unfortunately  the ALLshare DLNA app still doesn’t work on the Focus and Omnia 7 even after the firmware updates.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Best advise would be to wait for the official release.
If you want to flash the RTM just go here:
    http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2011/08/13/windows-phone-7-mango-rtm-leaked-and-available-now/

Then wait for the firmware push (or do what I did above).
You could also try to flash to an unbranded NoDo firmware like the KC1 and wait for the update notification.

  • Mikkel

It seems that zune is able to make a successfull restore.

I am nodo on my samsung omnia 7, i still haven’t received my mango update. Come on Deutsch telekom!  (aka T-mobile!!)

  • Frederik

I am having the same issue, after update stuck  on the Samsung logo screen. Also installed latest drivers, but I receive an error: No devices were found as well…

  • Spinsoft

Everything went according to above guide so big thx! (Omnia 7, T-Mobile RC1).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Florian-Caro/652326635 Florian Caro

Mmmmm seems like i am stuck at “creating a backup : 100%”  …
Did somebody have the same problem ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Florian-Caro/652326635 Florian Caro

Should i wait a little more or try to update without backup ? Don’t know what will happen if i disconnect the phone…

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Normally you should be safe to disconnect it if it’s still stuck on the backup process (this was the initial issue back in the pre-NoDo update days)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Florian-Caro/652326635 Florian Caro

it’s ok i disconnected and ran without the backup. MANGO !!!!!   :-)

  • dean

hey i got a big problem i update my omnia 7 then my phone restart . and an error appeares than said fail to reboot . and now it wont start up it just boot saying samsung omnia 7 start up :( please help me im disperate now .

  • Frederik

Hey – I had the same issue, download WP7Engineer.exe which you can find on this site, than download I8700XXKH5 which you can also find here, and than put your Phone in download mode. Once in download mode, you use the WP7Engineer tool to upload the I8700XXKH5 firmware and of you go…

  • Lynchi

Ended up flashing an unbranded 7008 ROM , and eventually updated my way to Mango ! Very happy .. (got rid of my TMo flash screen too)

  • dean

its wired still on wp7 said on the port its none even thought my phone is plug in on my pic

  • dean

    pc

  • olav

Got same problem, and now my phone only show the Samsung Omnia 7 start up and stops there. Is there any way to hardware reset the phone???

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

As noted in many replies here. Just boot your device in Download Mode and try to restore via the Zune Client. If it doesn’t work just try to flash an older NoDo Rom on it (KC1 one is the best IMO)

  • olav

Download Mode just says “Do not trun off. It takes about 10 minutes.” And it have been there for more then 60 minutes. Any clues?

  • olav

    Start Zune and exit :-)

  • http://twitter.com/iikeek iikeek

thank you so much!!!! just updated my carrier locked omnia 7 8gb to mango and than updated frimware with your manual. thanks a lot!!!!! keep up the good work!

  • fzncloud

zomg… I’m about to adlgslaidgaslgdl throw my phone out the window.

I had my omnia 7 chevron unlocked and I managed to trick my phone into
updating to pre mango. After that it automatically gave me the final
mango update + samsung specific update.

Because I had sideloaded apps and many registry mods, I decided to flash
back to my original Optus rom (same one I chevron unlocked) and do a
    clean update.

Stupid thing is, I have flashed it 4 times since last night and still am
unable to get the samsung specific update. The final 7720 update
package received does not mention the ‘samsung update’ which was
highlighted in like orange or red.

Trying to load the firmware via the guides on this thread fail as the following error:

    Error:

    Update device 33b01896 – 0e0ffe5f – eb0f6478 – d0de3ce7 Complete with error code

: 80180048, error message: IU (Image Update) installation failed due to an error.

same error as the previous walshed phones??

The only time my phone did update via this method was when I performed
the push on the pre mango OS. But I had to flash again as I was stuck on
the logo as many others have been.

  • Sonnguyen_

I just updated to Mango sucessfully but noticed that my firmware number was lower than what you listed here. Would I get a seperate Samsung update soon or will i have to flash this? What are the benefits from this specifically? Thanks

  • Matt

Sorry a bit confused.. I have a unlocked Omnia 7 (tmobile uk) which is currently on NODO.
Do I have to wait for the Mango OS update before being able to update the firmware as above ?
Is there any way to chnage this phone to a debranded Omnia 7 (which might then speed up the Mango Update ?)

    Thanks

Try forcing the update on your phone using the internet disconnecting technique. Apparently some users on your carrier have been sucessful. Or, if you can’t wait that long, do what I did and flash a new clean rom with a carrier that definately is delivering Mango.

Heres a question that no one seems to be able to answer – I forced Mango on my phone, when I found out the firmware was wrong and didn’t match my friends, I went back to Nodo via the Zune restore function. What I’d like to know is whether this will stop me from getting the official Mango update through the correct channels

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

    nope you should be fine

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

The cab must be in the same folder as the update tools.

Hello! Thanks for your advice, I’ve now updated to Mango. I have a few questions though :) Do you know if it is possible to flash-back to official builds now that I have a engineering bootloader? Is there any way for an unofficial unlock on this build? And will this build receive future updates? If you know the answers then please reply, thanks.

Ok.. i read this long thread and took the chance opdating my Omnia 7… and it failed… cant get past the Samsung Omnia 7 logo. so after reading several others posts i found this thread at Microsoft.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-wpdevices/samsung-omnia-7-bricked-stuck-in-boot-loop/76831b31-2c5b-4d3b-8f65-06111e1f3798?page=1
Hold down Camera, Volume Down and Power bottun. When it vibrates you let go of the Power bottun. Keep the other two pressed down until you see the screen change to the picture of a computer and a USB connection. After that you can use the restore feature in the Updater program.

  • Jp

Thanks, the download worked. Unfortunately, I seem to have bricked my phone. Stuck on the logo and hard reset doesn’t work. Any tips, or am I screwed?
