What's new in the Samsung Omnia 7 Mango firmware

I finally took the time to flash yesterday’s leaked Omnia 7 Mango I8700XXKH2 firmware and used it for a few hours to try to see if there was anything new in there. First off you must remember that this is an engineering T-Mobile DE ROM that includes all of the carriers apps that can easily be uninstalled afterwards. Thankfully it also includes several fixes and improvements that I’m going to list below:

1) Updated camera driver: Touch-focus now works (instead of simply touch-to-capture), Bing Vision no longer looses focus and correctly adjusts the white balance in low light environments.
2) Updated Motion Sensors driver: Digital Compass is now faster and more accurate. The accelerator is also faster when switching orientation in Internet Explorer.
3) Updated Radio software: WiFi and Cellular data transfers appear to be faster (applications downloads are faster as are page loading times in IE9)
4) The hidden WiFi Network feature is now available.
5) Bing Music is now faster and more accurate (updated mic driver + radio update I guess)
6) Option to select 2G or 3G data connection. Not really new but nice to have it back (thanks for the reminder in the comments)

I’ll update this post if I ever find more stuff so keep an eye on it.

    Hi,

I have flashed it too, so far it is delicious but did you try the Youtube application ( Offcial ). It seems to be not working!

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

The YouTube “plugin” is acting funny since last month. Google is making constant changes that seem to screw WP7 users. Most embedded videos are also no longer fall back to the HTML5 stream through the OS media player (something I discovered a few weeks http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2011/07/11/windows-phone-7-mango-embedded-youtube-videos-and-fast-tabs-switching/). Some do while some won’t even though they are embedded in the same way. It’s a bit ridiculous.

  • qaiser ahmad

Cool can you Look how much fps you get in the ie9 fish test?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Same as before. No changes in 3D performance either.

  • Kim Kristensen

    Hotspot ?

  • Kim Kristensen

    can i remove the T-Mobile apps ?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

    Nope.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

    As I said in the post..yes. :)

  • Kim Kristensen

carriers apps that can easily be installed afterwards ,is what you wrote ;-)

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Woops! Meant to say uninstalled… thanks for the heads up.

Is there T-Mobile logo on the start up screen?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

    Yup.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NX2QZQSHPTUAPYROXN4O446RZ4 Victor

is it possible to update the drivers only? I have Mango RTM on my Omnia 7, thanks

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Most probably by just flashing the firmware (Phone, Eboot, CSC) and not the PDA part (the OS). But I wouldn’t recommend that. Actually I wouldn’t recommend doing anything unless your really want to mess around with your phone. I don’t even know for sure if the new boot-loader will allow me to go back to a retail firmware.

  • Kim Kristensen

You haven’t tried that yet ? thats brave ,what if you can’t go back ,then you can’t get the official Mango ?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Yup something like that.. but logically it should work though so  I’m not that worried. Will try it in a few days.

  • Kim Kristensen

do i have to be in nodo to use this flash ,coz i’m on 7712 now ?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Nope you should be able to Flash any Omnia 7 this way.

  • Kim Kristensen

Ok ,it just don’t work for me ,the start button stays gray .

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Did you install everything (Samsung USB drivers etc..) Boot your device in Download Mode and make sure that the Zune software is closed..

  • Kim Kristensen

Boot your device in Download Mode ,this i haven’t tried before how to?

  • Kim Kristensen

    found out

  • Flosadresse

do you or anybody have an idear when the hotspot feature is coming? i allready have mango beta installed and there is still no wlan hotspot or tethering option (just the clamsy one with the diagnostic code).
and even with this here mentioned firmware update there is no hotspot :(
    when is it coming???

  • Lehieu1810

    Does it have real-multitask ????

  • Anonymous

According to sfunlock twitter, you can go back to other ROMs, http://bit.ly/mYbt3i
    Rejoice!

  • http://twitter.com/b16bkostas Techtacy

    hehehe ;)

  • Ro

Really simple and rather embarrassing question here, but would this wipe the contents of the phone?

  • Phobius

is there any 16-bit color banding?? after the nodo update i noticed some serious color banding on my omnia 7, and it’s still here. my wallpapers look bad, browser renders ugly, etc.

    thanks in advance!

  • Anonymous

    Yes

  • Ro

Cheers! But would it then be possible to restore a backup in order to put stuff back on the phone, or would that not work?

  • Dsasda

    @phobias:disqus  Mango fixes the banding.
I’m trying this tomorrow morning :)
I wonder if it’s possible to create a ROM that allows sideloading…

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

There’s no more banding in the OS with Mango (besides 3rd Party apps. Devs now have the option to use 32bit rendering in Mango though)

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Official no. But there’s an hack/app somewhere in the xda forums that should allow this (and it only backs up apps IIRC). Not worth the effort IMO.

  • Maxi

MMS No longer works unfortunately :(

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

    Mango supports multi-tasking.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

WiFi hotspot is Already built into the OS but can only be enabled by the carrier. Same for USB tethering ( in the case only HTC exposes it on the HTC Radar and TItan for now)

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Simply download Samsung Network Profile app from the marketplace to fix that (search for it if it doesn’t show up in the Samsung Zone)

  • Flosadresse

ok. I have a sim free Omnia 7 without any branding, and my carrier allows tethering (but does not have the omnia in his portfolio) so how can it be enabled by the carrier?

  • http://www.facebook.com/sfantu.asteapta Sfântu’ A?teapt?

I’ve installed it too and another must-have feature, the possibility to select between 3G or 2G.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=593150390 Trond Bie

I get error that the device does not match image, this after beeing in download mode and installing the drivers. zune is also not open. coming from nodo.

  • ClockworkFish

Are there any impovements with 720p video (30fps?) on this ROM?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

You’ll have to pay for the monthly tethering option offered by your carrier (should be an option in your contract).

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

24/25fps 720P video encoding is a hardware limitation of the Qualcomm QSD8250 SoC (the issue with the Omnia 7 is abnormally fast shutter speed though and white balance detection). The MSM8X55 and MSM7X30 support 30fps 720P encoding but it I don’t know if Mango’s codecs support has been updated for those newly supported chipsets.

maybe this is not the right place to ask, but i flashed my omnia7 too. However i want to get back to my old version wich was 7392, how do i do that?

  • Anonymous

I flashed my Omnia 7 last night, but the Radio version is still 2424.11.2.2, not 2424.11.7.2… Any idea about it?!

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

I guess that you will have to flash this pre-nodo firmware: http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2011/05/21/new-samsung-omnia-7-firmware-rom-available-i8700xxkc1-xxkb2/

then update to 7392 via Zune.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

That strange. Did you flash every file (there are 4 different files that have to be loaded in the updater)?

  • Anonymous

Yes, of course. First time, I user the updater from the archive, but didn’t work, than I downloaded the new one (linked in the text), and that’s worked, except my Radio Software version update…

    Any idea?! :S

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Siebertz/100000066721844 Max Siebertz

thnx for the incredible fast response, going to try it immediatly!
    THNX!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Siebertz/100000066721844 Max Siebertz

Ok i’ve got no plan on how to do this. Is there a guide that shows me how to get my version back to the one the omnia 7 released with? Thnx in advance.

  • Anonymous

Now I get it: I have to uncheck the “PDA” from the “Select imgae” block in the WP= Downloader 7.41, and now I have a 2424.11.7.2 Radio ROM! :)

  • Epilefnalber

hi guys, any tips for flashing? i get the message saying that my phone doesn’t match the image

  • Andrea

Can we say this is the final Mango or is this a RC or RTM yet? Thanks

  • Marc

    Hi,

I flashed my Omnia7 with the KH2. Where can I find the “hidden WiFi Network feature”, where did you enable it?

    Thanks, Marc

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

You must use the modified updater which is available here: http://www.mediafire.com/?eu2sw1k2wv2et9t

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

OS is RTM code but Firmware is RC1 code.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Turn Wifi on in the settings then tap on advanced and finally tap on the + icon in the application bar. You will then be allowed to add 3 secured/hidden Wifi networks.

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

It should be done the same way you have updated to the RC1 firmware here. Just download the previous firmware with its updater and flash it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Siebertz/100000066721844 Max Siebertz

but how to flash??? because i have a backup from 7392 i just dont know
how to get it back on. I did update my omnia 7 via zune but seems like
zune can neither restore nor flash the phone, i just doesnt show me that
    option. What to do?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Siebertz/100000066721844 Max Siebertz

Ok, i’ve got a retail ROM and a flash programm, my phone just doesn get recognized by the programm in download mode. It doesnt even get recognized by the pc. what now?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Max-Siebertz/100000066721844 Max Siebertz

ok a friend just did it for me, thanks anyway!

  • Andrea

    thanks

  • Reinierv007

    Great Rom

    Stable & reliable & fast

    The finally delivered!

  • TurnipThief

Any idea why my compass is still not working on firmware rev 2424.11.9.4 (T-Mobile)? My wife has the exact same phone on the same software versions and it is working ok for her. I also noticed that the avatar overlay on the xbox live tile is no longer working – I just get a gray box overlay.
