Force the NoDo and Mango update on the Samsung Omnia 7 and other Windows Phone 7 devices

Samsung Omnia 7 owners rejoice! There’s a fairly easy way to force the installation of the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update on your devices without any hacks at all. First off grab the PBK file here and follow the instructions courtesy of Dawnrazrblade:

Make sure your Zune software is up to date and close it! Switch your phone off and on then connect it to PC, go into settings on your phone and switch Flight Mode ON! now open up the file you downloaded (pbk) and select EUROIP PPTP Hungary
click Connect
USERNAME: demo
PASSWORD: demo
Open Zune and click on settings, click phone then scroll down to UPDATE.
I hope this works for you!  if not try again!! well guys if this helped you? could you please
make a donation anything is welcome and enjoy your NODO UPDATE

This probably won’t work and you’ll get a server connection error in the Zune Software when checking for the update. So instead of putting your device in flight mode just leave it connected to your cellular data network (not WiFi), make sure that “Use Cellular Data to check for Updates” functions is active (thanks for the tip ulub81) and go to the cellular settings of the OS:

- Plug-in your device
- Manually check for an update and after a couple of seconds turn off the cellular data connection on the device.
- Repeat this step until the Zune software tells you that there’s a March 2011 update available (this can’t take lots of tries so be patient). A good way to know when to turn off data is approx 4 or 5 secs after it switches to 3G+ on the device (so pull down the task menu to see what’s going on)
- Once you have the update notification just hit update and re-open the PBK app and hit hang-up so that the Zune software can download the update package.

voila…

UPDATE: This trick apparently works on other brands and models so try it out and report back. Can’t confirm yet if it works on branded devices so please keep the reports coming in and remember that it can take tons of tries to get it to work (took me around 50x).

UPDATE: If you are using a Samsung Focus (and other branded devices) just un-brand it before using the previous hack.

UPDATE March 30th: Here’s another way to get it:

1. Start Zune
2. Turn off Data connection and Wifi on the Phone
3. Connect the Phone with the PC (USB)
4. Start the update search in Zune
5. About 3 seconds later, disconnect your PC from the internet (Turn WLAN off).
6. Zune finds NoDo-Update. Press OK.
7. Connect to the internet again and install the update.

UPDATE September 27th: This method also works for the Mango update.

Works on HTC 7 Pro aswell

Nice! Is your 7 Pro carrier branded ?

    OK, USAIP.pbk wouldn’t open, so I put it in %SystemRoot%System32Ras. Than I ran %SystemRoot%System32rasphone.exe.

  • Ccmd_232

It worked from the 2nd time I swear :) !!!!. Now it is showing me that an update is avaiable, March 2011. My phone is Samsung Omnia 7, Non-carrier unbranded phone.

  • http://twitter.com/Phanatron Phanatron

I’m unsure if I’m following the second set of instructions correctly. As I understand it:

    1. Download USAIP.pbk
    2. Connect using Demo Demo
    3. Turn off and then on WP7
    4. Connect phone to PC
    5. Launch Zune
    6. Manually search for update
    7. While searching for update, turn off Celluar connectivity – after about 3 to 4 seconds (wifi should be off as well)
    8. Repeat if fails the first time

I think that’s what the instructions say but I’m unsure. Please correct if I’m making any mistake. I think I am because it doesn’t take 3-4 seconds for Zune to look for update.

Samsung Omnia 7 with JK1 Firmware (unbranded) from a T-Mobile Germany 16GB phone; took a few tries (about 10-15), make sure the dial-up connection remains active (i got kicked out a few times); wait 4-5 seconds after you see the 3G+ indicator, only then switch off the data connection on the phone.

The update is just running now… creating the backup :) great stuff, thanks a bunch guys!!!

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

That’s basically it. but no need to turn on/off device prior to plugin-it it actually. Turn-off cellular 4-5 seconds after it goes into 3G+ mode.

Updating your Windows Phone 7 to NoDo in a location where it is not launched yet
Requirements: An open Windows Phone 7 unit with the February update installed.
Overview: The USAIP cheats the Zune software into thinking that you are in a place where the NoDo is officially launched. This is safe and requires no registry hacks. This is not even the ROM one released two or three weeks back. Please familiarize yourself with the steps first before doing them.
    1. Download the USAIP and save it to you desktop. Link: http://usaip.eu/en/USAIP.pbk
    2. Your phone should have the following settings:
    • Flight Mode OFF
    • Wi-Fi ON / Cellular Data ON (The important thing here is that you are connected to the internet. One of the two should only be ON. Either Wi-Fi or Cellular Data is ON). Mine worked with the former.
    3. Run the USAIP file on the desktop and connect to EUROIP PPTP Hungary or EUROIP L2TP Hungary.
    4. USERNAME: demo
    PASSWORD: demo
(This connection is automatically closed after 7 minutes!)

    5. Connect your phone until the phone syncs to your Zune software
    6. Manually check for updates on the Zune (Settings > Phone > Update). Get the time from the moment you click on Update to the moment you get a server error code. You will use this time for step #7
    7. Now, click on Linking. We shall be clicking on Update again but make sure that your switch off either the cellular Data Connection or Wi-Fi on your phone (depending on which one you chose in #2) 1-2 seconds before the error appears. That is why timing is crucial in #6.
    8. The update should appear and no error message will appear if you time your steps well. Best of luck! ?

Awesome, this guide (using wifi) worked for me, thanks alot!!

  • Partha

Same for me here. Have a samsung focus at&t branded unlocked phone here in India. Have de-branded it through the registry. I don’t get the 3G or 3G+ icon understandabl as I don’t have a 3G connection. The data connection anyways doesn’t work. I have tried about 30 times today and I am not getting the 7390 update. I just get the notification for the 7008 update and that too fails with the time-out error. I have everything I can possibly find but I cannot get the update. I just refuse to hard reset the phone or erase all content just to get a lousy update. This is just very disgusting behaviour from Microsoft.

Hello, this worked for me on the 1st try, i see an update available but its February 2011 not March, i’m worried it will break my phone if i updated it as it did to other phones last month. my phone is a Samsung Omnia 7, Orange carrier (unlocked).
why am i not getting the March update?

  • N Ferreira

It works on my LG-Optimus 7, just turned off cellular data and wifi, connected the phone to my computer, opened zune, ran the pbk file, chose the hungary option, went back to zune, manually checked for the update, update available, pushed update, after 40 Minutes, it was done.

  • N Ferreira

    My LG-Optimus 7 worked

  • http://profiles.google.com/nstpd86 Death Eater

    Awesome…
    Managed to install the update.
    But gotta b patient though.
    Here is how I did…
    First attempt
    Wifi > on
    Data > off
Run USAIP.pbk and connect to EUROIP PPTP Hungary
    Check for update at Zune
After 4 to 5 secs off Wifi
Update prompt received from phone then continue to update

Subsequent tries all fail with error 80072EFF (can’t remember how many tries. I think about 10 tries)

    Last try
    Wifi > on
    Data > on
Run USAIP.pbk and connect to ASIAIP PPTP China
    Check for update at Zune
After 4 to 5 secs off Wifi then off data
    Update prompt received from phone
    Click update at Zune
Hang up the Dial-up connection (Rerun USAIP.pbk and click “Hang up”)
    Proceed to update the software.

Optus Branded Samsung Omnia 7 is now NoDo’d!!
    Thx All.
(Note: had to registry DeBrand for it to work – Chevron unlock still working on NoDo by the way)

  • http://twitter.com/iBuzman Buzman

I can confirm it works on Samsung Omnia 7 in Australia :-)
Chevron Unlocked, Registry Debranded, USAIP as described above.
Added bonus – when you receive your NoDO update via Zune the ChevronWP7 unlocked remains intact!!
    Thanks all esp Dawnrazrblade

I’m using carrier free Omnia 7, bought and used in Finland

Works like a charm on my Omnia 7 JK1…. thanks alot

    1. Download pbk file
    2. Make sure Zune is up to date, then close it out
    3. Turn off phone
    4. Plug phone into computer (it’ll turn itself on automatically after being plugged in). Zune will automatically start…close it out.
    5. Go into check for updates settings and make sure the right boxes are checked, then go into cellular settings, make sure you have a data connection, then leave phone on that screen
    6. Open pbk file and connect using method described above
    7. Open Zune and manually check for update. Five seconds into check, turn off data connection….five seconds after that, turn it back on, then 5 seconds later back off and so on so forth until the update found pop up shows up on your phone’s screen. The entire time you’re toggling this setting, Zune should be searching for an update. I had to toggle it 3 times before it worked.
    8. Hit update in Zune, then immediately reopen pbk file and disconnect from the pbk connection.

This worked for me and my T-Mo USA branded HD7 the very first time I tried it.

  • http://twitter.com/TorVez Victor Chavez

The update at the bottom (Update March 30th) totally worked on my US T-Mobile HD7. No need to download files or install anything. Just a matter of getting the phone settings right and turning off the computer internet access as it’s checking for the update. Just follow the steps.

    hi everyone,

the way that helped me came from Noticed.
Here are the few simple steps:

    1. start ZUNE
    2. connect your Phone to the PC
    3. turn WLAN and Cellular data off (on the Phone)
    4. search for the update via ZUNE (Settings -> Phone -> Update)
    5. 3 Seconds after it began to search simply disconnect your PC from internet (no matter if ethernet or WLAN)
    6. Update message should appear! Get your internet connection on the PC back up and download.

I did that twice, always successful. Although I’m running NoDo on my Phone now it is still not possible for me to use
a non US credit card at Marketplace :(

  • http://www.hollman-alu.nl Aluminium Kozijnen

Now am thinking, which instructions is best to follow.. Thanks for sharing this information..

  • http://www.shuboarder.co.uk Support

I successfully managed to do this on a HTC HD7 although my method was slightly different…
    I didn’t download any files.

    1. Launch Zune Software
    2. Connect phone via USB
    3. Go to updates…
    wait 1 second…
    4. Switch data connection off on phone
    wait 1 second…
    5. disconnect LAN on PC – UPDATE AVAILABLE!
    6. reconnect LAN on PC – proceed with update.

The really important bit it seemed was that the data connection should be disabled AFTER you start to check for updates.
I could never get it to work when checking for updates with the data connection already disabled.

Hope this helps someone else that still hasn’t got this update!

I could not get it work on my mozart as well ~ sad ~

  • Danilo

Hi. Explain for me about your process, please. I´m a samsung omnia 7 from Orange UK unlocked too. Thank’s Danilo from Brazil

  • Nick

Fantastic!  This worked for me at first attempt!!

    1. I don’t have 3G, just EDGE.
    2. I got an update at the first attempt!  (T-mobile Omnia 7 from WM 7.0 to 7.5)
    3. Once an update was made available, I switched off EDGE and connected wifi (not that it mattered).  The Hungary pbk also timed out and bits are downloading via default connection.
