Samsung Omnia 7 patch released to allow 7392 update

Samsung has just released a patch that is meant to allow the Omnia 7 handsets to correctly install the 7392 security update. We’ve know for a while that Microsoft halted all Samsung Windows Phone 7 updates because of an unknown issue that had to be fixed but this new development most probably means that the roll out will re-start now and that the solution will be provided in the form of this Samsung patch instead of an “updated” package as announced by Microsoft a couple of days ago.

You can download the patch here and the full instructions here (pdf). It mus be applied if you encounter a 801812C1 error during the update process but I’m going to try it out anyway to see if it actually updates the device’s firmware or not. It’s not yet known if the Samsung Focus will also receive a similar patch.

Update: Just applied the patch to my Omnia 7 and the only thing I noticed is that it has free-d up approximately 100Mb on the device. I wouldn’t be surprised if the patch also quickly deletes some of the cached data on the device.
Update 2: As it was pointed out to me on Twitter, the screenshot above (wich I took from the PDF) shows the 1.3.1.0 version of the update support tool while the EXE publicly provided by Samsung is only 1.2.

Update3: Microsoft has just resumed the WP7 update roll out for the Samsung devices.

Dear author, please let me know if you tried it.  I didn’t received any notification of update from Microsoft (so I didn’t had the error problem).

Actually I trid to run this tool but when I connected the phone with UpVolume+Camera button it doesn’t show me “Download mode”   but I see a phone with cable and a notebook  so the tool doesn’t detect my phone.  :(

I applied the patch but no 7392 notification yet.
Regarding the “Download Mode”: I’m able to enter it without plug-in my device. Just pressing Volume Up + Camera anf then Power Button at the same time. Once I’m in it I plug my deice to the PC.

Is this a new firmware?  If so, what’s the version number?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Nope it doesn’t touch the Firmware.

You can safely do it but it won’t change anything for now.We will have to wait until Ms re-start the Samsung roll-out.

Weird…  I’ll hold off until the security update starts rolling out.

omnia 7 here. just  been prompted of the 7392 update. So, microsoft is obviously “a go” again for samsung omnia 7. yay

  • NoDownloadModeForMe

I can’t enter the download mode on my NoDo open market device. Any ideas?

People – I have good news.  This update is NoDo (March update) + security Update (April), thus making your phone fully up to date. I didn’t try anything fancy like Chevron or the Hungarian method (or whatever people call it). I simply connected my phone to my laptop and Zune promptly notified me of the update. 20 mins later, without a glitch, I’m sorted. Thank you Samsung and thank you Microsoft, you were 2 months late and the ride was pretty rough but lets hope you learn from this farce in readiness for Mango.

PS – I didn’t install this patch, it worked without it!

You mean you have been prompted later after installation? How long it took?

  • Bexmax

…And were you connected on the PC (through or out of Zune) while waiting for the update confirmation?

  • Bexmax

I installed the patch and run it as advised. Now when I connect it to my laptop and check for the update on Zune, it checks and says that my phone is already updated, but the version still is 7.0.7004.
    Any suggestions?

  • Teeeeeest

Really great! -.- >What about T-Mobile-branded devices? Until 5 minutes ago -  no update available (still 7.0.7004). I guess we have to wait until the carrier releases it? …

  • Gbristow15

had my samsung omnia 7 for about 2 weeks, still no update yet t-mobile uk my version still says “7004″ should i just wait for the update, dont fancy tinkering with pressing buttons and all that jazz, anyone in uk had the update?

  • Nada15f

I couldn’t install the patch. when I press camera key with the volume and attached it to my pc it give me the Samsung screen and then another screen of my phone is connecting to the pc :(
    Any suggestions

Same problem for me: can´t install patch, as I can´t enter download mode. Getting the whit laptop+phone pic as well.
Could this be a problem with T-Mobile branded phones?

  • Omniaaa

It seems, that only the T-Mobile-devices have a bad Bootloader-version (4.10.1.9), which can not activate the volume-up-button while rebooting. Cosequently (if you have this bootloader-version) you can not enter the download-mode and instead you see the pic you described (Phone with PC and cable).
Until now I have seen only T-Mobile-branded-devices, which have this bootloader-version, so it seems that it could be a T-Mobile-specific problem, but I’m not sure….

  • Nada15f

thank you for ur response. so, is there any thing I can do to fix this. by the way my phone is unlocked when I first bought it but it still shows the T-Mobile logo when I turn it on

Keep in mind that this patch is only necessary if the update fails on your device. So don’t worry about it for now. The updates should be pushed out to you next week according to MS. Only Unbranded devices are being targeted this week.

    Cheers.

Can’t enter the download mode either on my Omnia 7, branded by Orange France – using the volume up+camera+power up results in the phone getting stuck on the white Samsung boot logo… I also have the 4.10.1.9 boot loader, so no patch for me at the moment…

  • Bexmax

    Hi everyone!
I so far never received any updates, NoDo or any other, and my version is still as when I bought the phone: 7.0.7004. However, I already installed the patch successfully and awaiting for the update notice.
Do you think I will have any problems updating the device properly since I installed the patch without need to? Thanks

  • Gbristow15

ok quiet concerned that i need to update with patch for the phone to then find the NoDO update, is this the case or will Zune find it no matter what?

Also i read somewhere that if you can not enter download mode and get the windows phone to PC logo you are unable to update with any future patch can someone confirm?

    Thanks

     There is.
    Google “usb jig”.

Does firmware version change after applying the fix?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

     Nope.

It’s not only T-Mobile devices. Mine is not a T-Mobile and I have the faulty boot loader. I’m ready to ditch both Samsung and Phone 7 if this doesn’t get solved in a reasonable manner pretty soon.

  • Dorph

Not only t-mobile have the problem with “cant get into downlad mode” i have it too on a non t-mobile.

  • Scotty

as my phone has the 4.10.1.9 boot loader and I cannot get it to enter download mode as a result and being physically disabled at least the boot loader explains the problem I’m having, when my wife called Samsung they said it was Microsoft’s fault and she had to call them and they couldn’t help so it’s off to Nokia in October / November shame as the Omnia 7 except for this issue is a good phone but not being able to update it since NoDo
