It’s starting to look like everybody’s trying to jump into the Windows Mobile 7 rumor bandwagon lately. This time it’s Eldar Murtazin from Mobile-review in Russia who is claiming (via twitter) to have had a hands-on with Microsoft’s upcoming OS. Frankly everything he said sound shady as hell (and he always had one of the worst track record when it comes to WinMo, he for example claimed that it was based on the Windows 7 kernel at first and then back to WinCE and that development was “stopped” last year…). He goes on to say that WM7 isn’t compatible with previous WM apps (which is quite possible), that the UI is in someways similar to the Zune HD’s but then says that it also looks like the early WM7 mockups we have seen (they don’t look like the Zune HD UI at all so.. WTH?). He then claims that it won’t be out this year (even thought we have LG who, as recently as yesterday supposedly said that they will have a WM7 phone in September 2010). He then claims that those early WM7 mock ups we saw back in January 2008 are WM6.5 mock-ups (again WTH? The first page of the document has the Windows Mobile 7 logo that you can see at the top of this news and WM6.5 didn’t even exist & wasn’t on the roadmap back in 2007!). Finally, according to Eldar, WM7 is a pale copy of Android 3.1/3.2 and the iPhone (so I guess he also had the chance to play with the future iPhone OS and Android 3.X ?)
Check out the whole thing here:

ya…he sounds like a total ass…
anyways..even if it was true, he says that it was some early build so who cares..a lot might have changed UI wise till the latest build…im sure WM7 rockd ur socks off…
A cornerstone at Microsoft is backwards compatibility. Look at the effort put into Windows 7. It’s actually more backward compatible than Vista with the integrated “XP Mode.”
I am absolutely 100% sure that there will be apps made for WM6.x, WM5, and older that will not work well (or at all) on WM7. There are too many apps in the ecosystem and new features sometimes break old ones. It’s not intended, but it happens. Additionally, sometimes older APIs change with time. For example, WinCE 6, supporting true memory isolation and so on, breaks a ton of system-level apps written for WinCE 5 (every system app made for WM thus far).
However, the bulk of apps will probably work. The ones that don’t will need to be tweaked, but not written from scratch.
Microsoft is a business company. If they want to remain competitive with RIM, they need business apps. Are they going to rewrite the entire Pocket Office suite? Maybe, but it seems like a lot of extra work.
Besides, Windows CE is incredibly mature and powerful and used on multiple platforms, from the XBox to rugged mobile devices, to high security devices, to, most famously, Windows Phone. Why would they change that when they were under the gun to begin with from a time perspective?
I am highly highly skeptical.
I think what we will see is more like a XP to Vista transitition. Some apps won’t work just due to OS changes (to be expected), but the bulk will because the underlying system is just a newer version of the old.
Finally, Microsoft loves the developers. They really do! Announcing that all the developers’ hard work for Windows Phone 6.5 and the app store is all for naught next year would just not at all be consistent with their tradition of “here’s our next OS, here’s how you make sure you are compatible” trend they set.
Blame Microsoft for the rumors.
Ballmer has talked about Windows Mobile 7. He said he wishes it was here now. He teased us, yet left out essential details that we need to know.
The reports say that all current Windows Mobile 6 devices (including the upcoming WM 6.6) will be incompatible with Windows Mobile 7, and not upgradeable. That puts a lot of fear and doubt into the minds of anyone contemplating the purchase of a Windows Mobile phone today. It seems like the 6.x platform is coming to an end. There’ll be no software. No upgrades.
Microsoft urgently needs talk straight at the MWC conference in February. It ugently needs to release WM7, or the market for 6.x phones is going to crash (well, it’s crashed already, judging by its shrinking sales). It is going to be impossible to sell a Windows Mobile 6.6 phone, until Windows Mobile 7 is out.
I agree with the article… On top of that, I wouldn’t believe anything about WM7 until I see a leaked rom or sys files. Were is the build? Gimmie the files……. Prove you have the build
I completely believe the non-backwards compatibility comments. If you look, very few apps from 5 (less than VGA resolution) work on 6.5 – even Microsoft’s own “Bing App” won’t work correctly on the Verizon Touch Pro 2…
With the ‘experience’ being what MS is selling in the new version, you don’t want ‘old crappy resolution software’ being modded to fit on it.
Makes total sense to me!
