WP BENCH 2 Windows Phone 7 Benchmark released

Robert Varga has just informed me that his Windows Phone 7 benchmarking application WP BENCH 2 is now available on the Marketplace. The most notable change is the inclusion of online charts and user submitted results which will allow you to easily compare your device’s performance against others. WP BENCH 2 is also Mango compatible and has been further tweaked to better test the handsets.

WP BENCH 2 Windows Phone Benchmark coming soon with Mango support an Online charts

Robert Varga who developed WP BENCH for Windows Phone 7 just gave me the heads up about the upcoming version of his benchmarking tool for Windows Phone 7 dubbed WP BENCH 2. This newer version will officially support Mango and include new feature like new UI, online charts, user profile etc.

Regarding the big boost in performance that I have noticed a few days ago, Robert thinks that this may be due to a change in Mango: data blocks smaller than 4.2MB are apparently being written to the devices memory first while a second thread is used to write data to the storage memory. This is why we are seeing such a huge boost in the results (setting the data block size to 5MB shows results similar to NoDo). Looks like a nice OS level optimization that should help boost performance in certain situations. Check out WP BENCH 2 in action after the break:

Huge storage memory speed improvements in Windows Phone Mango

According to the WP BENCH benchmark application the Mango Beta 2 features some really nice improvements in storage memory read/write speed. As you can see in the picture above my Samsung Omnia 7 reached 13.07MB/s in Storage Memory speed with the Mango Beta 2 compared to 3.82 MB/s on NoDo. As with all synthetic benchmarks it’s always advised to take the results with a pinch of salt (especially when you take into account that the app wasn’t developed for Mango). I also ran the bench again with a bigger test file (2mb) which you can see in the picture after the break:
