Windows Phone 7.7 Tango features revealed

A handful of screenshot of the upcoming Windows Phone 7.7 Build named Tango have recently appeared on a Russian site. As we have previously heard Tango will be mainly aimed at enabling lower-end handset to run Windows Phone 7 with lower ram requirements (even though 256MB has always been the minimum req for WP7), lower MP cameras, making some sensors optional and adding more language and region support. As you can see in the screenshot above this will obviously introduce a form of fragmentation in the ecosystem because some application will require more than 256Mb to run and thus not be compatible with some of the low end device running Tango. This is in someday reminiscent to the way the iOS platform works in terms of application compatibly across the iPhone models (but still far from the mess that is Android).

In addition to this Tango will also finally introduce video, audio sharing and multiple-attachments via MMS. Exporting contacts to the SIM card and more Data roaming option:

Microsoft releases Windows Phone Retail Insider app to help phone sales

Besides handing out money to retail sellers when they sell a Windows Phone device, Microsoft has also released a special application designed for them. It’s name Retail Insider and features the following:

Key Features:

- Multiple Live tiles you can pin to your Start Screen that show the latest content updates
- A device library with demo suggestions and selling tips
- A curated list of the best Windows Phone apps with links to Marketplace
- Easy sharing of app content via Facebook, Twitter and e-mail
- An aggregated stream of updates from Microsoft’s social media channels for retail sellers
- One-click access to customer demo videos that help you show your customers the best features of Windows Phone
- Built-in Windows Phone FAQ and quick links to step-by-step how-to’s

I’m not entirely sure that this would have any impact on Windows Phone’s retail sales in the short term but it’s a step in the right direction. Better late than never… THe app is surprisingly well laid out and packed with useful info like device hardware specifications, tips, FAQs and sale pitches. You can grab it here.

Windows Phone Updates: Nothing has changed according to Microsoft

Mary Joe Foley decided to directly get in touch with Microsoft after the now infamous Windows Phone Update blog post that surfaces last night. Here’s what Greg Sullivan, Senior Product Manager on Windows Phone told her:

“Nothing has changed in regard to how we work with carriers to deliver Windows Phone updates to our customers,”

This can very well be true given that, like I noted in the original story last night, the wording of the whole thing wasn’t clear at all. Nowhere did it say that the carriers can now skip more than one update (officially, Mobile operators can only hold delivery for one update and are force to bundle it with the following one). Anyway, I guess that it’s best to wait and see how things will pan out even though I don’t agree at all with the fact that carriers can decided to not push important software fixes and security updates. This whole story just proves one thing…again: Microsoft still can’t get its PR and Marketing right. Shame….

Windows Phone updates no longer mandatory: Up to carriers to request them ?

Seems like Microsoft is doing its best to come out with bad PR when communicating around Windows Phone. The latest update to the Windows Phone blog surely looks like a friggin step backwards in terms of ecosystem support. There isn’t much to say here besides “WTF?!”. So I will leave you with the quote below:

This week we started to make a new Windows Phone update —8107—available to many Windows Phone customers. The update, available to all carriers that request it, is part of our ongoing maintenance of Windows Phone. For more details on what’s included, check out Update History on the Windows Phone website.

In the months ahead, we’ll continue to send out firmware and maintenance updates as needed. These will be available across the globe—although not everybody will receive or require them. It depends on your country, carrier, and phone model. But remember that you’ll never have to guess when a Windows Phone update is waiting: Just watch for the pop up notification on your device.

There are also a few changes on the way for the blog and website. As we continue our growth, we won’t be individually detailing country, model, and carrier details on the Where’s My Phone Update? site any longer.

I can understand model specific updates and bug fixes etc But why the hell would a carrier decide if my handset will get the latest version of the OS? Android..what? Anyway, thankfully we can all manually update our handsets by bypassing all these politic issue as seen with the recent 7.10.8107.79 roll out here. Then again, I may have gotten it all wrong because the blog post isn’t worded in the best way?

UPDATE: Oddly enough the blog post now links to a Error page as if it no longer exists (but it’s still present on the Windows Phone Blog’s home page). This could simply be a temporary server glitch though…Thanks bc3tech

UPDATE 2: Looks like it was indeed a server glitch cause the post is now back up in its original form…

Windows Phone 7 build 7.10.8107.79 roll out started get it now and update manually

Microsoft has started to roll out a new Windows Phone 7 update build 7.10.8107.79 yesterday which contains the following fixes:

On-screen keyboard. Fixes an issue to prevent the keyboard from disappearing during typing.

Email. Fixes a Google mail syncing issue.

Location. Fixes a location access issue. With this fix, the Me feature in the People Hub sends anonymous information about nearby Wi-Fi access points and cell towers to Microsoft only if you agree to allow the Check In function to access and use location information.

Security. Revokes digital certificates from DigiCert Sdn Bhd to address an encryption issue.

Email threads. Fixes an email issue related to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. With this fix, when you reply to or forward a message, the original message is now included in your response.

Voicemail. Fixes a voicemail notification display issue that occurs on some European and Asian networks under certain conditions.

If you can’t or don’t want to wait until you receive the update notification simply download the CAB file from the links below and update your handset handset manually by following the simple instructions.

UPDATE: The update process is apparently failing if the handset isn’t already running build 7740 (and running 7720 instead). Needs confirmation though… Here’s the 7720 to 7740 update CAB just in case:

Tango for Windows Phone 7 is out now

The hotly anticipated free video calls application Tango is now available in the windows Phone 7 Marketplace as promised a few days ago. I didn’t have time to test it yet but it did install on the Samsung Omnia 7 which doesn’t feature a front facing camera so I guess that I can receive calls on it and see the other person if he has a handset with a FFC. Anyway here are the application’s features:

• Free calls between Windows Phone, Android and iOS phones and tablets, and PCs
• Save money with free international calls to other Tango members
• Start a phone call with Tango and switch to a video call when you have something to show by tapping the camera icon
• We automatically find the friends that already have Tango
• No log in and password – create an account in less than five seconds
• Invite your friends by Text and Email
• Simple and easy to use

You can grab it here.

Enable Internet Sharing / Tethering on your Samsung Omnia 7 and Samsung Focus in one click

If you still haven’t managed to flash your Samsung Omnia 7 with the latest I8700XXKI4 firmware I posted a few days ago there’s seems to be a even easier way to enable Internet Sharing / Tethering on your device and the Samsung Focus too as long as it is developer unlocked courtesy of voluptuary:

1) First install the WP Dev Tools and unlock your Samsung phone.
2) Use the Application Deployment tool to send THIS to your phone. You do not need to run it and you can delete it after it has been deployed.
3) Install the Diagnosis app by typing ##634#
4) After the Diagnosis app starts type *#9908# and select ‘System Tweaks’ press ‘Save’ then ‘Close’ and restart your phone.
5) Your phone now has Internet sharing and as a bonus is interop unlocked!

Please try it out and let me know if it worked for you.

New Samsung Omnia 7 firmware with internet sharing available: I8700XXKI4

Want that fancy WiFi Hotspot internet sharing Tethering feature on you Windows Phone 7 device? If you are a Samsung Omnia 7 owner today is your lucky day. T-Mobile Germany pushed out a new firmware last night version I8700XXKI4 with the tethering / Internet Sharing feature enabled (thanks for the tip guys!). I’m a nice guy so I grabbed the firmware file and uploaded it so you can manually install it on your handset. Follow the instructions below (same a before and I’m not responsible if it doesn’t work for you):

- Download the firmware here (remember that’s not the OS but only the firmware bits) then download the WPupdate tools from here.
- Unzip the Tools in a folder then unzip the firmware in the same folder as the tools.
- Plug in your device, wait until the Zune client starts and then close it.
- Run the the Updater and press S or B (depending on the size of your balls..)
- your phone will then reboot in download mode and update (don’t unplug it or do stupid things with your PC during the whole process..)

Please note that this won’t work if you are running the latest I8700XXKI3 firmware from SFR (there’s a conflict with the 5.9.1.4 bootloader and maybe others too) so you will have to painfully revert back to an older firmware like the T-Mobile RC1 here (I8700XXKH2).

Lenovo LePhone S2 Windows Phone 7 handset out in the wild

Looks like the new Windows Phone OEM that Andy Lees was talking about last week is Chinese manufacturer Lenovo. The company’s first Windows Phone 7 handsets which is currently named Lenovo LePhone S2 just appeared in several pictures today and from the looks of it it doesn’t really look that high end in terms of build quality (and screen) but does seem to have a front facing camera. This device may very well be aimed at the Asian / Chinese market only and probably be released when the Tango update starts to roll out in the first half of 2012. More pictures after the break:

Tango video chat application coming to Windows Phone 7 Mango on November 7th

The already announced and showcased Tango video chat application will officially be released on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango on November 7th according to the company. Given that the official Skype app for Windows Phone 7 is not yet ready for prime-time, Tango will be the only game in town unless you have a Samsung handset which can already use the manufacturers own Video Call application. This is all fine an dandy..unless you plan on getting the Nokia Lumia 800 or Lumia 710 because both handsets unfortunately lack a front facing camera. On the other hand I probably only used video chat once in my life so it really depends on where your priorities are…

Update your Samsung Omnia 7 to the latest I8700XXKI3 firmware now

Here’s my little gift for you this weekend. I just managed to download the latest Samsung Omnia 7 I8700XXKI3 Firmware package wish was pushed out by SFR yesterday and I’m giving it back to you so you can manually update your device following the same instructions I posted a few days ago when the latest Samsung Mango firmware was pushed. Please remember that if something goes wrong you will be on your own. Words of advise before attempting to update your handset: If it doesn’t work you will most probably get two different error:

- 800705B4 : Time out error which happens on many Omnia 7 depending on how much free storage you have left. Solution: hard reset you handsets.
- 8018001E: There’s a conflict with the current bootloader on your handsets (happened to me with the latest Mango firmware): Solution: you are screwed. Roll back to a previous bootloader/firmware

Here are the instructions:

- Download the firmware here (remember that’s not the OS but only the firmware bits) then download the WPupdate tools from here.
- Unzip the Tools in a folder then unzip the firmware in the same folder as the tools.
- Plug in your device, wait until the Zune client starts and then close it.
- Run the the Updater and press S or B (depending on the size of your balls..)
- your phone will then reboot in download mode and update (don’t unplug it or do stupid things with your PC during the whole process..)

Report back if it works for you. If not then please take a look at all the messages in the previous post before posting.

New Samsung Omnia 7 Mango firmware rolled out: I8700XXKI3

A new Samsung Omnia 7 firmware has been rolled-out today by french carrier SFR along side it’s Mango update push. I unfortunately don’t have the update (because I unbranded my SFR Omnia 7 handset) and don’t have the firmware bites either yet. As you can see below it’s newer than the previous I8700XXKH5 firmware released during the initial Mango roll out phase and most probably based on the engineering SFR firmware leaked a few weeks ago:

OS Version: 7.10.7720.68
Firmware revision number: 2424.11.9.3
Hardware revision number: 3.15.0.4
Radio software version: 2424.11.9.1
Radio hardware version: 0.0.0.800
Bootloader version: 5.9.1.4
Chip SOC version: 0.36.2.0

It would be awesome if If a brave soul is willing to send me the firmware bits so we can manually flashed it.

Thanks to everybody who sent this in.

How to get AllShare DLNA to work the Samsung Omnia 7 and Samsung Focus

A relatively easy trick enables you to bypass the current restriction put in place to allow the Allshare DLNA application to work on the Samsung Omnia 7 and Samsung Focus devices:

- Connect you device to a WiFi network
- Launch the Allshare app and instantly hit the start/home button of your device (before the error message pops up
- Navigate back to the Allshare application by long pressing on the back button and selecting it in the fast application switching view
- Voila you’re done

I just did it and it works like a charm but I sincerely hope that Samsung updates it though.

UPDATE: Actually it doesn’t properly work at all. The application in its current state doesn’t have access to the multimedia files stored on the device. You can only use is as a remote control to playback files that are shared on a network.

HD video support added to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango on new handsets

One little feature that most Windows Phone (and iOS) users are usually not aware of is that videos transferred to the handsets via the Zune client are all re-encoded in WVGA (or close to this) especially when they have a higher resolution. This is done so that the user never encounters a situation where a video isn’t played back properly or at a sub-par frame rate because of a dodging encoding codec or resolution (the first generation QSD8250 Snapdragon SOC only  supported the following HD formats MPEG-4 Simple Profile Up to 30fps @720p 10Mbps / H.264 High Profile v3.0 Up to 30fps @720p (1280×720) 10Mbps). The only 720P videos that where ever played back on a current Windows Phone 7 handsets are the ones shot by the camera, transferred to the phone with the USB mas storage trick or  via the Skydrive trick.

I decided to take a look at the current codecs supported in Mango and noticed that Microsoft has finally updated the list with support for 720P HD video playback at 30fps for the new MSM8255 and MSM7230 powered handsets only. Here’s the list of codecs that are listed with “Some Windows Phone 7.5 devices support 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps”:

New Samsung Omnia 7 Mango Firmware leaked: I8700XXKH5

A new Mango firmware for the Samsung Omnia 7 was leaked this morning if you are interested in such things. This one is SFR branded (French carrier) but is labeled as engineering and packs the latest I8700XXKH5 firmware which is the one pushed out yesterday and the same one I posted in my manual update guide too. The only difference here is that you will probably get an SFR boot screen and there apps pre-installed on the device. You can grab it here (flashtools here).
