Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.3 Gingerbread update announced

Still wondering if Sony Ericsson is really serious about being a big player in the Android ecosytem? Well, today’s announcement that the Xperia X10 will get a new lease of life this summer via an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update further proves that the company is firmly behind Google mobile OS and Windows Phone 7 is definitely something of the past for the company. As you probably already know, SE isn’t known for its execution or product support but things seem to be moving in the right direction ever since the announcement of the PlayStation Suite and certified games system and the company’s new roaster of Android devices announced at MWC last which includes the Xperia Play gaming phone (hands on video here) and sleek looking Xperia Arc (my hands on video here).

The Xperia X10 is still getting Android 2.1 in September. But where’s Froyo?

It’s been a while since I posted about the Sony Ericsson X10 mainly because it’s kind of “old news” here in Europe (the device came out a while ago here). So what’s the deal? Well, back in May Sony Ericsson officially announced that the Xperia X10will get its Android 2.1 update in September but since then nothing new has been heard and with the launch of the US version still sporting Android 1.6 many have been wondering if the X10 will ever receive 2.1 as originaly planned. Today Sony Ericsson UK has confirmed  on Twitter that 2.1 was still scheduled to hit the streets in September with HD video recoding and a couple of other features:

The update is due for release before the end of September. This will still include HD video recording. We hope this helps.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to get Android 2.1 and HD video recoding update in Q4 2010

Finally some good news coming out of Sony Ericsson today; The Xperia X10 will officially get an upgrade to Android 2.1 later this year (Q4 2010) and receive a couple of new features too:

Some examples of user benefits that will be included in the UXP upgrade for Xperia™ X10 in Q4 2010 are:
- Upgrade to Android OS version 2.1
- HD video recording as per the same execution as Sony Ericsson Vivaz™
- Wireless home connectivity via DLNA
- Improvements to signature applications Timescape™ and Mediascape to make them even smarter and richer

HD- Video (720P) recording hopefully means that HTC will also deliver on its promises…remember that HTC told me a couple of months ago that DivX playback and HD video will be enabled on the HTC Desire with a future update…Anyway, SE is also announcing that the Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro will also be updated to Android 2.1 in Q4 2010.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to receive Android 2.1 and Multi-Touch update later this year

As it was announced a few weeks ago, the Sony Ericssion Xperia X10 will receive an update to Android 2.1 in H2 2010 (around September). but most importantly this update will also enable multi-touch support on the device. Contrary to what some SE representative state a little while ago, the X10 doe support this function (his statement didn’t make any sense anyways I have never heard of a capacitive display that doesn’t support it, it’s just a driver thing.)

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 will get Android 2.X, but not now

In a recent blog post titled “Xperia X10 will be upgradeable”, Sony Ericsson’s Sumit Malhotra discuss the merits of SE’s Timescape UI sitting on top of Android and the fact that every time he demos the X10 people always ask him why it is still based on Android 1.6 and not a higher version:

On the other hand when moving over to talk about the user interface, I have felt some skepticism in the air since people tend to have adopted quickly to Android release version as their context of competitiveness. Quite often, the starting point for this part of the demonstration is a 1.6 release remark if I would generalize my interactions to date. [...] I have probably painted a positive picture, but I am sharing the discussions I have had and my take outs from them. I am not trying to hide from the fact that there are platform upgrades between android 1.6 and 2.1, if utilized can enhance the experience for developers and users. Having that said, I have had discussions with carriers that are very sensitive and concerned generally about taking on devices in their range that are not competitive enough. I have faced head to head comparisons between Xperia X10 and generic 2.1 Android devices (as well as other OS) and carriers have concluded that we still stand strong in comparison. This because of the layer that we ad on top of the generic OS.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 coming to Vodafone UK in April

According to Vodafone UK’s webstore the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is scheduled to arrive in April in the UK. Unfortunately there’s no pricing yet but it’s good to finally have an availability date this time (unlike T-Mobile Germany’s announcement a few days ago). Hopefully the X10 won’t be delayed…

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 announced on T-Mobile Germany

T-Mobile Germany just announced that they are going to launch the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in April. Unfortunately no price (or data plan) was given today. As you probably already know the X10 is Sony Ericsson’s first Android (1.6) smartphone and is powered by a Qualcomm SnapDragon Chipset clocked at 1Ghz (and also has a pretty good 8Mpix camera). Hopefully the handset will come out on time and won’t be delayed…

The Xperia X10 hits the FCC for a second round

Following last weeks FCC approval of the Sony Ericsson X10 her comes a second Xperia X10 but this time with the WCDMA 850 / 1900 and Quad Edge bands. This means that the phone is compatible with AT&T, Bell, Telus and Rogers. Other than that it’s the usual FCC stuff. The good news though, is that SE seems to be pushing the X10 hard so it will hopefully be released on time (early 2010).
Don’t forget to grab the user manual here.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 passes the FCC

Xperia X10 FCC
Will the Xperia X10 be on time? Well, it looks like Sony Ericsson is pushing hard to get it right this time around (unlike the Xperia X2). The device has just passed the FCC in the US which means that it shouldn’t be too far off. Head over to the FCC’s website to check out all the info (user manual etc..)

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 hands-on preview

Xperia X10 preview
The boys at PhoneArena posted their Xperia X10 preview yesterday. It’s starting to look like Sony Eriscssonmay have a winner here, especially if thrye release it on time (early next year). The UI still needs some performance improvements but the hardware seems to be top notch (the camera is one of the best on a smartphone, so check out the WVGA video sample they’ve posted).
SE is obviously push hard the X10 and “abandoning” the WinMo based X2.

If the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 was to be released on the market today, it would be a smashing hit. It comes with great design, eye-pleasing interface and proper integration of social networks and services. Moreover, the X10 has what it takes to win over its rivals in terms of hardware – 4-inch screen, fast 1GHz processor and 8.1-megapixel camera. All this sounds truly impressive, but when do we get to see it hit the shelves? Officially, the Xperia X10 is expected in Q1 2010. We do hope that Sony Ericsson manages to roll out the phone on schedule, because delays equate to an increased number of strong rivals. As of today, however, things are looking good for Sony Ericsson´s first Android device and its future seems serene.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 800×480 (WVGA) video sample

Here’s a WVGA (800×480) video shot by Techblog.gr with the Xperia X10:

What do you guys think? Doesn’t look bad IMO (remember that it’s a pre-release device and a Youtube quality in’t the best..).

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 picture samples

Techblog.grjust posted the rest of their ongoing Xperia X10 preview. This time they posted a couple of sample picture taken with the phone’s 8.1Mpix camera. As you can see the quality is really good. What’s interesting though is that some samples exhibits the opposite of what we have been seeing on the HTC HD2. Unlike pictures from HTC’s device the center of the picture doesnt suffer from any pink/purple tint, but you’ll notice that the edge of the pictures do have some purple/pink tinting.
