SkyDrive Application for Windows Phone and iOS released

Microsoft has just released the official SkyDrive application for Windows Phone 7 and iOS today. As you most probably know the SkyDrive cloud storage service is already partially integrated in the Office hub in windows Phone but lacks a lot of features that should have been there in the first place like document deletion, folder creation etc. This new application now fixes this but one would hope the all these new functionlaities will be fully integrated in a future version of the OS  and won’t require the users to download an application especially on Microsoft’s own platform. The iOS versions is essentially identical to the WP7 one. Check out a video of it in action after the break:

Skydrive Video streaming directly from the Pictures Hub

Here’s another neat little trick that will allow you to stream videos hosted on your Skydrive directly from within the phones Pictures hub in Mango 7712. As I showed you in my previous video it was now possible to stream music and video via the browser when accessing the Skydrive from the Office Hub. But this isn’t the best UX ever so the trick here is to go to your Skydrive (on your PC) then the change the folder type to “Photos”.

New HTML5 Skydrive website launched

Microsoft Windows Live team has just the new HTML5 based Skydrive web portal today which will finally put an end to totally messed up UI and UX that was the previous iteration of the service. hitting www.skydrive.com will finally allow users to view and edit all of their uploaded content (photos, video, Office docs etc..) in on single place and the new HTML5 based website blazing fast making the whole experience much more enjoyable than before..

- We improved many core tasks and scenarios. For example, clicking folders and navigating photo albums will go from 6-9 seconds down to 100-300 milliseconds, and we took advantage of hardware accelerated graphics to make it fast to click through photo slideshows. We’ll address additional core tasks in the future.

- We focused on building a site powered by HTML5 so that we could include advancements like HTML5 Video, CSS3, and client rendered experiences, as well as making sure our slide show experience was great in all browsers without any special software.

- We evaluated and removed anything that slowed the experience down or got in the way of a fast, clean site.

- With Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7, you can pin SkyDrive to your taskbar for faster access to your files. You can create Word, Excel, or PowerPoint docs stored in the cloud in just one click.

Microsoft My Phone backup service to be discounted in October 2011

You all must have already gotten the email but if you didn’t here’s what Microsoft just announced:

On August 7, 2011, the My Phone service will stop saving content from phones to the My Phone service. If you rely on the My Phone service to back-up the content on your Windows Mobile 6.x phone, you will be affected.

Starting August 7 2011 all the My Phone content will be transferred to the user’s Skydrive and will be only accessible via the Skydrive web site. Finally on October 6 2011 the http://www.microsoft.com/myphone website will be shot down and users will no longer be able to log into the My Phone service and restore their saved content on their Windows Mobile 6.X device but Microsoft will still continue to store content until October 5 2012 (the company will ship physical copies of the content if requested by the user).

Windows Phone 7 Mango SkyDrive Cloud syncing features detailed

The Windows Live Team has just posted more details about the new Skydrive integration in Windows Phone 7 Mango. There isn’t really anything new that we haven’t heard of before but it’s definitely nice to see Microsoft talking about the platform’s Cloud features a day after Apple made a big fuzz about its new iCloud service. As we already knew Mango will give users the ability to finally upload videos to their Skydrive (and also share them by mail, MMS and Facebook). Interestingly, uploading is done in the background so you will not be stuck waiting for the transfer to finish before using your phone.

What is exactly the Windows Phone Mobile Studio ?

As you have probably already seen, Mary Jo Foley posted about a Microsoft Job listing that mentions something called the Windows Phone Mobile Studio and speculates that this may be Microsoft’s updated Windows Phone version of the now defunct Kin Studio cloud synching service. I personally think that this “Mobile Studio” is actually a UI/UX design team within Microsoft and not an actual product or service. This is not to say that there isn’t a Windows Phone version of the Kin Studio in the works or that this team isn’t working on one though. Microsoft has already officially stated that it was working on this ever since Kin was pronounced dead.
