Sharing Music and Videos with Messenger in Windows Phone 7 Mango

Here’s a Mango feature that I wasn’t aware off: Music and Video sharing via Messenger. As you probably already know the Messenger integration in the Windows Phone 7 Mango (build 7712) allows you to share pictures with your chat buddies but what you may not know (and I personally didn’t, so thanks to Nathaniel for giving me the heads up on this one) is that you can share music files (wma/mp3) and videos files (wmw/mp4) from a PC to a windows Phone on Messenger. As you will see in the video demo I shot below the files are downloaded to the phone and can then be played back from there. They are unfortunately not saved to the Music & Video hub so you will only show up in their respective Messenger thread (they will be gone from your phone when you delete the conversation thread. Video after the break:

Skydrive Video streaming directly from the Pictures Hub

Here’s another neat little trick that will allow you to stream videos hosted on your Skydrive directly from within the phones Pictures hub in Mango 7712. As I showed you in my previous video it was now possible to stream music and video via the browser when accessing the Skydrive from the Office Hub. But this isn’t the best UX ever so the trick here is to go to your Skydrive (on your PC) then the change the folder type to “Photos”.

Windows Phone Mango 7712: Streaming music and video from the Skrydrive through the browser

Another thing that now “works” in the latest Mango 7712 build is the ability to stream MP3 files that have been uploaded to a Skydrive. Don’t get excited though, contrary to what some people may assume this isn’t some kind of official Skydrive Music Streaming service at all. Streaming MP3 files has always been possible in Windows Phone 7 via the browser and this is exactly what’s happening here but prior to this new Mango release it didn’t work on with MP3 files uploaded on Skydrive (first spotted by Mannan here). As you will see in the video I shot all Microsoft did here is enable the browser to stream an MP3 file from the Skydrive website ,nothing else. You still have to painfully manually upload the files via your desktop and go through IE9 Mobile to access them (the Office Hub will always send you to the browser) Same works for any MP3 file on any server:

What’s new in Windows Phone Mango 7712: Changes and improvements

Just took a quick look at the new 7712 Windows Phone 7 Mango Beta build that was pushed out to developer unlocked handsets today and compiled a short list of what has changed since the latest Beta release (Build 7661).

First, there’s a new Mango wall paper (the one you seen in the picture above). How cool is that? not much…ok. Anyway, the biggest change is the addition of Twitter and LinkedIn integration (it wasn’t enabled in the previous release). Linking the accounts to your Windows Live ID is relatively straightforward and shouldn’t take more than a minute.
