Copy and Paste now available on Windows Phone 7 developers handsets

Microsoft has pushed out an update to Windows Phone 7 which includes the missing copy and paste feature (the OS version is now 7.0.7338.0). Unfortunately this update is only available to Windows Phone 7 developer handset (Samsung Taylor or LG GW910).  Here’s a brief description of the feature:

“A user can tap a word in mail, IE, Word, etc and that word is then highlighted with arrows on both sides. One can then drag to the left or right to include more words. An icon appears above the highlighted word(s) (looks very similar to the copy icon in Office 2010) to copy. Open a new document, once the cursor is set/blinking and the soft keyboard appears, a paste icon (again, looks the same as the paste icon in Office 2010) is shown just above the top row of letters. In “Messaging”, a user can long press a specific IM which open up the hidden menu that now includes copy. Paste where you wish…”

14 minutes long Windows Phone 7 and Xbox Live video

Microsoft had a Windows Phone 7 booth at PAX 2010 this year with a couple of devices on display so it was only a matter of time before videos of the event start to pop up on YouTube. Tested.com has just upped a 14 mins long video of the OS in action followed by some hands-on action with several games (Ilomilo, The Harvest, Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst and Zombies!). There’s a couple of mistakes in the video (IE Mobile isn’t based on Webkit and there’s no Twitter integration in the People’s Hub). One thing you will notice thought is that the Samsung Taylor handset is a lot smoother/more responsive  than the LG GW910 (even-though they have the same CPU/GPU etc…). I’ve experienced the same thing every time I used both devices but keep in mind that these are pre-production prototypes. Check out the full video after the break:

The LG Panther / GW910 hits the FCC

The LG Panther / GW910 Windows Phone handset has just passed the FCC certification in the US. But keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that the device will ever hit retail. Microsoft has made it clear that this device and the Samsung Taylor (and Asus Galaxy 6) were only prototype development handset that are not going to be full blown retail products. Also keep in mind that the Samsung Taylor has passed the FCC a cople of weeks ago under the Samsung SHG-i707 name. So no big deal here. The LG E900 and C900 are going to be LG’s first WP7 retail products.

Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7 interview and Ilomilo walkthrough videos

Can’t get enough of Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7 and Ilomilo? Here are two videos courtesy of Microsoft shot during GamesCom last week. The first one is an interview of Microsoft’s  Xbox Live General Manger, Ron Pessner discussing the Xbox Live implementation on Windows Phone 7. The second is a walkthrough of Ilomilo on an LG Panther/ GW910 handset (handled by Microsoft’s General Manager for Mobile Gamin at Microsoft’s Game Studios, Matt Booty). LG on track to release its first Windows Phone 7 handset in October

Contrary to the popular belief that LG was going to ship its first Windows Phone 7 (which I later corrected after getting in contact with LG’sPR) the south Korean company is said to be on track to launch the first WP7 device in October in Europe. The first handset will sport a 3.8″ screen and no hardware keyboard which means that it will either be the LG C900 or LG E900. LG will then launch the first device in the US in November ( with hardware keyboards similar to the  LG Panther GW910). The LG Windows Phone 7device will be part of the Optimus line of smartphone along side the company’s Android Offerings.

Several LG Windows Phone 7 handsets to be released this year: first one in September? Nope

According to LG’s PR Ken Hong the company is expected to launch its first Windows phone 7 device in September (this sounds a bit early given that the OS isn’t expected to launch before October 7th) and will follow up with other WP7 handsets before the year end. As I have reported several times here, LG is the primary OEM parter for Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft currently has an dedicated LG Team in Redmond working on devices. Other than the LG Panther we can probably expect to see the LG C900 and LG E900.

UPDATE: Ken Hong just told me that he told IDG “around end of the Q3″ and not in “September”!

LG Panther / GW910 developer phone shown of on video

Some developers have been lucky enough to receive one of the few Windows Phone 7  prototype handsets sent by Microsoft earlier this week and videos are already starting to show up on YouTube. Below you will see a quick walkthrough video of the LG Panther / GW910 device:

LG Panther GW910 hands on videos

Not much to post about today folks (yeah I’m not going to waste time talking about Apple’s iPhone 4 antenna issues or give anymore coverage to that stupid anti-Windows Phone 7 post at InfoWorld, writing a long answer to it 2 days later is as much link-bait as his original piece, just let it die folks). Anyway, here are 2 short hands-on videos of the LG Panther / GW910 in action from Russia. The Windows Phone 7 build used isn’t the fastest around (in the first vid only strangely) but it gives you an idea of how things are looking like now. As I said earlier this week after my hands-on with it; the Samsung Taylor I had in hand had a screaming fast build that rivaled the speed of Emulator but the LG Panther had another that wasn’t a snappy. Check them out after the break:

Windows Phone 7 live from the Microsoft Campus

I had the chance to go  to the Microsoft Campus a few hours ago to play a bit with Windows Phone 7 and gather some new info about the much anticipated OS.  The session started with a presentation by the Tequila Rapido Team who discussed the Metro UI and the design process of building WP7 applications with SketchFlow. They’ve also unveiled a new Windows Phone 7 application dedicated to the french horse channel Equidia (sorry for the picture quality below). I highly suggest that you take a look at their Renault Rent application and SketchFlow video.

HTC Schubert Windows Phone 7 handset launching November 17th on T-Mobile

After yesterday’s rumored HTC Gold UK launch date comes the HTC Schubert which will supposedly launch on T-Mobile US on November 17th according to a leaked roadmap. As I said yesterday, the HTC Schubert is probably the same device as the HTC Mondrian, Gold, Mozart etc… Interestingly it also looks like LG may have its LG Panther / GW910 Windows Phone 7 handset out around the same time as you can see in the leaked roadmap pictured above where there is non-Android LG handset launching in November to…

LG confirms Windows Phone 7 device launching this year

This isn’t really breaking news but just a confirmation that LG is focusing on delivering there first Windows Phone 7 handset, the LG Panther aka GW910 later this year. It’s been well known for a while the LG is Microsoft’s main OEM partner on Windows Phone 7. Both companies signed a partnership back in 2009 during Mobile World Congress and I later found out the there’s an dedicted LG Team in Remdond working on Windows Phone 7 hardware. But because of the delays and the growing sucess of Android LG has decidded to focus on both operating systems (insead of WP7 only as it was originaly announced when the partnership was signed.

LG Panther / GW910 Windows Phone 7 phone Hands-on video

For those of you (me included) who can’t get enough Windows Phone 7 action especially when it’s on the LG Panther / GW910 here’s a 5 minutes long hands-on video shot at the Microsoft Benelux Windows Phone Get Together event last week. The first part of the video was already included in the video I posted 2 days ago but the rest is totally new and you will see a bit of the Zune Hub, Pictures Hub and settings. I’m must say that the screen looks really vibrant and crisp hopefully it won’t take long before we get some video playback action (You may have noticed in a previous video that the demo device was loaded with 720P files..). Check it out after the break:

Microsoft Benelux Windows Phone 7 keynote ang LG Panther action

Microsoft Benelux hosted a Windows Phone 7 event for its local MVPs in the Netherlands this week and talked about the latest development updates and had a couple of prototype to show off. The Video is in Dutch but you can pretty much guess what is being said based on the PowerPoint slides projected behind the speaker. The other piece of news is that Windows Phone 7 is supposedly launching in October-November (this confirms what MS VP Mich Mathews said during her introduction speech yesterday). Be sure to check the neat looking LG Panther GW910 action at the end of the video. The device (and the OS) is looking better than ever but IE Mobile still needs a bit of work IMO. Video after the break:

Watch the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace in action

Here’s a nice TechED session dedicated to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. You see how the Marketplace in action (on the LG Panther / GW910) and also see how the application Trial API actually works and some talk about the private Beta testing functionality that we talked about a few days ago. Be sure to also listen to the Q&A session afterwards. Loke Ui’s claim that games must be rated PG13 is a joke….I hope (he jokes that they can’t bring Halo because it’s rated M) because the Twin Blades game that you previously saw in my hands-on session is really gore and is probably rated M (and is going to be one of the Hero launch application this fall). Some interesting info about the application’s performance: An Application must display a new screen 1 second after the user opens it (can be a splash screen) then the application has a maximum of 19 seconds to make sure that the user can operate it, if not the application will be rejected by Microsoft. There’s also a demo of the Windows Phone 7 development handset unlocker at the end. The video is after the break:

Windows Phone 7 development handsets shipping in July to select developers

LG Panther / GW910 @ Microsoft France

Microsoft’s Brad Watson has confirmed today during TechED  what I repoted 2 days ago ; the Windows Phone 7 development handsets will finally be available in July to select developers who will have to contact Microsoft to request one (devices will be available to devs in 29 countries). Several prototype models will be available but all will have similar hardware specifications so you can probably expect to see the LG Panther / GW910, Asus Galaxy 6 and probably some other OEM (I don’t really think that we are going to see one from HTC).

UPDATE: Brad Watson has just posted more information :

I’m here at TechEd, and there’s a lot of talk about Windows Phone 7 devices and when they are going to be made available. One cool thing that the team is doing is handing out coupons to event attendees redeemable for general availability devices when they start shipping. We’re only handing out around 50 or so of these coupons, so it’s definitely not a broad distribution. It’s meant for people who are attending sessions or wearing Windows Phone hats around the show floor.

Developer devices are also on everyone’s lips. During the Windows Phone session yesterday, Terry Myerson (he runs engineering for Windows Phone 7) stated that we will start putting phones into select developers’ hands next month. That’s exciting stuff. Obviously we’re starting with the developers who have invested in the Silverlight and .NET platforms, registered at Windows Phone Marketplace and have begun building apps with the Windows Phones Developer Tools. Specifics of the programs are TBD, but we are going to want to get phones into large ISV hands, small team hands…you name it. We’re definitely not going to carpet bomb phones; we want to get maximum leverage for our phone distribution to developers.

More LG Panther Windows Phone 7 pictures and video

Here are some new pitures of LG’s first Windows Phone 7 handset the LG Panther aka LG GW910. This is the same prototype handset that Microsoft has been sending to its worldwide offices to start training people and developers. And as you can see written on the box the LG Panther can also capture video in 720P! Be sure to check back here Wednesday were I will hopefully have some hands-on impressions with pictures and videos of the device in action!

- This is definitely still a prototype device, and there are still quite a few rough edges to be fixed. The device OS is still being updated with new builds almost every other day.
- Even the packaging and box is expected to be different before the final product ships. For example, the current box is not even using the correct Windows Phone 7 logo.
- Despite it’s prototype status, the phone appears to be more or less feature complete and incredibly responsive and fast. The animations are all very smooth.
- For the time being, you need a special build of the desktop Zune software (Dorado) to sync with the device; the current released version of desktop Zune software won’t work.
- The camera works pretty well, and the resulting photo is sharp, as you can see below:

check out a video of the bootup sequence after the break:
