World record video wall made of 144 Windows Phones

Here’s a not so serious news blurb about a neat looking project which involves a whole lot of Windows Phones. Finnish company Symbio decided to break the Blinkendroids “largest animated mobile phone mosaic” (72 phones) with 144 Window Phone handset (mainly HTC Trophy 7 and LG Optimus 7 devices) all controlled by a 145th Windows Phone via WiFi at Microsoft’s TechDays 2012 event in Helsinki. Here’s what Jani Nevalainen, the project instigator, describes it:

We did it with 144 client WP phones, which were actually old work phones from Microsoft Finland, mainly HTC Trophy and LG Optimus 7 – not a single Lumia was used. They lend them for us to try this when they heard our idea of trying to connect as many WP phones as possible together. One phone (144+1, so actually we used 145 phones) was giving sync signals to all client phones and telling them when to change and to what the display image. The client could show videos and still pictures. There was a laptop running http server, and initially when first time run, they downloaded the content from there, but after that no longer required the http server at all. The record it broke was Blinkendroids “largest animated mobile phone mosaic”, which is currently (officially 72, unofficial is 112 or so).

The team was one coder and two guys creating the videos and two guys who built the stand and drilled holes for chargers.

Chek out the whole thing in action after the break

Verizon: No Windows Phones unless it supports LTE

Waiting for Verizon to finally offer a Mango handset this year ? Don’t waist your time because the company’s chief market officer, Marni Walden, has officially stated that the carrier won’t push Microsoft’s mobile OS unless the devices support LTE (the HTC Trophy is still on sale though).

“We’ve communicated to Microsoft that LTE is critical to us,” she said. “We need to see a timeline that makes sense if we want to continue to represent them.”

It doesn’t get lamer than that, right? The latest rumor is that Nokia is preparing an LTE version of the Lumia 800 for AT&T so it’s safe to assume that this one would also be carried by Verizon too but then again this is nothing more than a rumor. Keep in mind that to support LTE a 2nd generation Windows Phone 7 device will have to feature a Qualcomm MDM9600 multi-modem alongside it’s MSM8655 SoC.

Verizon Windows Phone Mango roll out also starting on September 27th?

Take this one with a grain of salt because according to a Verizon chat-room rep the WCDMA HTC Trophy Mango update will be pushed on the same day as AT&T; September 27th. Once again you should take this with some caution knowing that support folks usually don’t know much about theses kinds of stuff. In either cases you can already update your HTC 7 Trophy if you are in Europe or in the US on Verizon by flashing with the final Firmware which has leaked a few days ago (edit: nope, looks like Verizon’s final firmware is newer than the one that leaked!).

French mobile operator SFR ready for Mango roll out

SFR which is the french equivalent of Vodafone is apparently ready for the Mango roll out if you have one of their branded HTC 7 Trophy handsets.  The screenshot above is from the carriers client interface describe how to plug in the device into the PC to update the phone and lists the firmware version 2250.21.40600.163 (SFR’s my carrier so I was able to verify it and take screenshot myself). But there’s a catch… there’s no update yet because the roll out hasn’t started yet. The “continue” icon simply leads to the Microsoft’s Windows Phone website. Anyway, only a few more days and Mango will be free available to all of you fruit lovers.

Verizon HTC Trophy dummy spotted at Best Buy

The launch of the Verizon’s first Windows Phone 7 handset can only be imminent now that dummy HTC 7 Trophy phones have been spotted in retail shops (Best Buy). The CDMA Trophy recently appeared on Verizon’s website but the company has yet to officially announce its availability even though every carrier in the world already offers at least one WP7 handset. Remember that Verizon is the biggest android carrier in the US and has just started to sell the iPhone 4 so don’t expect to see them heavily promote this device.

HTC 7 Trophy shows up in Vodafone’s inventory

The mysterious HTC 7 Trophy that was certified a couple of days ago has now appeared in Vodafone Germany’s inventory according to the picture above. Nothing about the device is know yet other than the fact that to original HTC Trophy was a Candy-bar Qwerty device that was meant to launch earlier this year with Windows Mobile 6.5. The fact that only screen resolution currently supported in Windows Phone 7 is WVGA (800×480) makes me wonder if the original design will be similar because this kind of aspect ration doesn’t really fit such a form factor (unless the keyboard slides like the rumored Dell Lightning)

HTC 7 Trophy Windows Phone 7 handset approved

One more Windows Phone 7 HTC handset has been partially revealed after its certification. This time it’s the HTC 7 Trophy which was certified yesterday. The fact that it has a 7 in its name makes yesterday’s HTC HD7 rumor a bit more believable. What’s interesting here is that the original HTC Trophy was a blackberry like candybar smartphone so this mysterious HTC handset is probably HTC’s first WP7 featuring a hardware keyboard.

HTC HD Mini Software Tour

Here’s a follow up to yesterday’s HTC HD Mini hardware tour video (1080p video is still being processed by YouTube). This time you’ll see the device in action and a quick comparison against the current top of the line Windows Phone, the HTC HD2. As you will see the HTC HD Mini is nearly as smooth and snappy as the HD2 but lacks in other areas. If you want me to show some other parts of the software don’t hesitate to ask bellow, on Twitter or by mail.

HTC 2010 handsets line-up leaked: HTC Passion/Bravo,Tera, Legend, Photon..

Holly Molly! HTC’s 2010 handset line up just leaked over at XDA Devs a few minutes ago!
Let’s start with what everybody’s been waiting for the HTC Passion/Dragon:

HTC’s hero model of Q1-Q2 of 2010 , a real flagship with exceptional specs and characteristics, will be named as “HTC Bravo”. Rumors wanted this device with loads of different names (Passion/Dragon) and specs, but below you will see its original fotos allong with up-to-now specs. Bravo supposedly will follow the same good recepie as happened with Leo (HD2) and we can say, that if HTC had something in mind about an Android version of Leo, then Bravo is the one.

Representative of the Performance (and not by chance ) category based on HTC’s categorization it has fantastic style and design, eqquiped with the sucessive killer Snapdragon QSD 8250 1GHz CPU (as in Leo), HD 720p Video caprure, 3.7″ WVGA AMOLED screen, 256RAM (guess it will be increased to 512Mb accoridng to my latest inside nfo) with 16GB MicroSD card in-box, and 1400mAh battery capacity and HTC Sence of course, is certainly what eveybody would like to own, considering that will b loaded with the latest Android OS possible at that time. HTC’s “killer phone” as they call it, will definately face on its way and will have to compete, Rachael X10i SE and time is left to tell what the results will bring to light And as HTC’s latest moto is about their new 2010 portfolio, i will inheritate and say, “I want it NOW” Arriving April 2010.

Nearly the same specs as the HTC HD2 but with an smaller AMOLED) screen and 720P encoding (looks like HTC is shafting HD2 owners by only enabeling it on the Bravo/Passion…)

Then we have 3 other android devices, the the HTC Salsa:

“Salsa” is a Blackkberry styled, Android, handset, with just 8.6mm thickness, absolutely stylish, slimmest QWERTY keypad, distinctive “Edge” design and great for social networking as it fully supports all well known Social Networking sites, Facebook, Twitter etc, while also supports IM capabilities and browsing firends photo albums via Flickr pre-installed app.Arriving June 2010.

The HTC Tide:

With “Tide”, user can njoy best of leading touch experience and a keypad. Like with Salsa, is great for social networking as it fully supports all well known Social Networking sites, Facebook, Twitter, Plurk etc, while also supports IM capabilities and browsing firends photo albums via Flickr pre-installed app. Loaded with Android OS. Arriving April 2010.

The HTC Buzz:

“Buzz” at first look, seems like it will be the ansestor of HTC Tattoo, as it offers the capabillity of covers change, for those who love changing their phones, by having multiple full different coloured covers. It’s and Android based has a huge 3.2″ sceen, 5MP Cam with Autofocus and Flash, awesome design and it’s designed for applications and applications sharing.Arriving May 2010.

The HTC Legend:

“Legend” is the ansestor of the most succsful Android device, along with “Magic”, the “HTC Hero”. Offers absolutely stylish look, covered with a metallic frame as you will see, slim with just 11.4mm, loaded with HTC Sense and a central bottom clickable Optical Mouse for easy navigation like with Magic and Hero and of course Android OS. Arriving March 2010.

Now it’s time for some Windows Mobile devices. Only 3 are planned to be launched in the first half of 2010 (compared to 5 Android devices).

The HTC Photon:

When i first took a closer look to “Photon” (without looking to its specs) i was shocked by its design and immediately thought that comparing to “Bravo” that will be HTC flagship device of 2010, as its almost the same with Leo with slight differences. Its a WM 6.5 device, 3.2″ HVGA screen, 256RAM, 5MP campera and eqquipped with Snapdragon MSM7227 600Hz CPU. As with “Bravo” it is expected to arrive on April 2010.

The HTC Trophy:

A month later, on May 2010, another WM 6.5 device, coded named as “Trophy”, will offer the opportunity of a touch phone with QWERT keypad, 3.0″ VGA screen, 5MP Camera, huge battery capacity, 1400mAh and nice design.

And finally the HTC Tera:

Last representative of the Productivity HTC category, we meet, the coded named device, “Tera”. It looks so alike to HTC Touch Pro2, thats it hard to find any differences. Slided-up full QWERTY keypad, loaded with WM 6.5 OS, 3.2MP Cam, 256RAM and 1300mAh, its a device which i don’t know if it has to show up something new, but will certainly b a medium consuming device.

It’s intersting to see that all three WinMo device are kinda low-end compared to the HTC HD2 (especially the screen resolutions) and don’t even meet the WM7 chassis 1 specs because of their lowres screen! Also, it seems like the HD2 will still be the highest speced device in HTC’s line up even compared to the HTC Bravo/Passion (if you excluded the fact that the Bravo’s screen is AMOLED). Now let’s see if HTC will finnaly enable 720P video encoding on the HD2 or shaft their users like they usually do…
