HTC Droid Incredible Android 2.2 Froyo update with 720P video support coming real soon

Verizon is one the verge of pushing out the Android 2.2 Froyo update OTA for the HTC Droid Incredible in the coming days according to inside sources. This update will supposedly pack the same features we saw a few days agoin another update (that was apparently pushed out OTA on Android 2.1 this past weekend) but with Froyo as a bonus.

I wanted to pass along that the upcoming Incredible MR will also include Froyo (originally it was going to be two separate MRs).
We are targeting the end of the month/first part of August. As a reminder, below are the highlights:
- Froyo
- Wifi 802.11 n
- 3G Mobile Hot Spot
- HTC Widget: Email
- HTC Widget: News
- EAS Updates
- 720p Video Recording
- Amazon MP3
- Skype

HTC Droid Incredible to get 720P video recording and Mobile Hostpot in next OTA update

Good news for all the HTC Droid Incredible owners out there. The next Over The Air update will enable 720P video recording and Mobile Hotspot on the device . You may remember that HTC told me a few moths ago that HTC Desire was capable of handling 720P encoding but because of time constraint the feature wasn’t enabled but was planed in a future update. Unfortunately HTC didn’t do anything since then even-though some folks over at XDA have already hacked their Nexus One to get this functionality. Now that the Droid Incredible will officially get it one can only hope that all other high end Android device from HTC will also be blessed with it (but HTC can still claim that they are only enabling it on the Droid because of the 8Mpix sensor…yeah sure..). Check out the video of the new ROM after the break:

HTC Incredible finally rooted

The HTC Incredible is finally rooted thanks to the Unrevoked team at XDA-Devs. It did take a while but it’s finally here and also nice (for the Incredible owners) to know that progress is being made. The instructions aren’t the easiest around but if you are brave enough head over to the source link.

AMOLED panel shortage causing HTC Incredible supply problems

According to Verzion’s CEO the supply problems currently affecting the HTC Incredible are caused by an AMOLED panel shortage on Samsung’s side. The PenTile Matrix AMOLED found on the HTC Incredible (and all other HTC devices featuring AMOLED screens. You check out how the matrix looks like in my HTC Desire review) is actually build by Clairvoyante (which was acquired by Samsung 2 years ago) but isn’t the same AMOLED (or SuperAMOLED) tech that Samsung uses on its own headsets.

HTC: Only some of the handsets released in 2010 will be upgraded to Android 2.2

This was expected and it has now been confirmed by HTC that only some of their handsets released this will get an upgrade to Android 2.2 aka Froyo. On the short list are: the HTC Desire, the HTC Incredible, HTC EVO 4G and the Google Nexus One. As you can see all three devices are SnapDragon based, this is because Flash 10.1 (which is bundled in Android 2.2) requires a Cortex A8 CPU and all other Adnroid devices like the HTC Legend and HTC Wildfire are ARM11. The release of the upgrade isn’t expected until the second half of the year (at the earliest) and the EVO 4G will probably ship with Android 2.1 next month.

Google Nexus One no longer coming to Verizon. Buy an HTC Droid Incredible instead

Why is anybody surprised here? Doesn’t it make sense that Verizon is no longer going to carry the Nexus One now that the HTC Droid Incredible is out? According to previous whispers the Nexus One was supposed to launch on back in March but the date passed with no sign of the handset coming out. On the other hand the HTC Droid Incredible is now officially launch on Verizon at the end of the week and is more feature rich than the Nexus On (8Mpix camera and 8Gb of internal Memory plus HTC’s Sense UI). Why would anybody want a Nexus One on Verizon now?

HTC Droid Incredible Reviews

The two first HTC Incredible reviews have been posted a few hours ago and it looks like HTC has once again released a pretty good product. There is obviously nothing really new or impressive on the Droid Incredible given that it is basically a Nexus one with 8Gb of internal memory and a 8Mpix camera. The devices biggest selling point is obviously the fact that it’s on Verizon and also the only SnpDragon powered phone with HTC’s Sense UI in the US. Here’s Engadget‘s conclusion:

Let’s just put this out there: the Droid Incredibleis the best Android device that you can purchase in America right now. It’s better than the Droid, better than the Nexus One, and certainly beats the pants off of any previous generation handsets like the Eris, myTouch, or Cliq. It’s not just a very, very good Android phone (though it is); it’s also an excellent smartphone no matter how you cut it. If you’re on Verizon right now, you’re finally getting really great options for phones, but the Incredible is currently sitting at the top of that heap with a good bit of distance to the next in line. Sure, there are still issues like a lack of quality titles in the Android Market, and if a hardware keyboard is a must, this won’t do the job for you. Also, while Sense is truly great on this phone, there may be users who prefer a more streamlined, stripped down experience. Still, if you’re looking for an ultra-fast, extremely capable smartphone that has the guts and gleam to go the distance, the Incredible just might be the Droid you’re looking for. Yes, we made that joke.

And here’s Gizmodo‘s:

The calculus is relatively simple: If you’re on Verizon and want a smartphone (and aren’t stuck with BlackBerrys), the Incredible is pretty much the one you should buy. With Palm’s future unclear, and its app ecosystem shaky, it’s hard to recommend the Pre, even though its software is generally more usable than Android. And the Droid’s single redeeming feature over this, a physical keyboard, is actually less usable than the custom keyboard HTC’s put on the Incredible. The Nexus One for Verizon looms, but the only reasons it could be considered superior—it feels better built and more expensive, and the promise of timely updates from Google—are mitigated by the fact the Incredible is here now, and HTC’s Sense does glossy up some of Android’s rough spots.

and here’s BGR:

This is always the hardest section to write because everyone has different taste, and everyone usually has their own reason for wanting a new phone. Maybe you dropped it in your toilet, maybe you want to smash your BlackBerry 9530 with a sledgehammer, maybe your boss can’t stop making fun of your Palm Centro — we’re not sure. What we do know is that HTC has come up with another incredible device, pushing the boundaries of Android in practically every direction we can think of. There is awesome corporate integration, tons of social networking elements built right in, a really friendly UI with fun and engaging widgets and animations, and a great web browser. If you are not a bare bones type of person and have no need for a physical keyboard (seriously, get over it already), we could not recommend a better phone on Verizon Wireless at this point in time.

HTC Droid Incredible Specifications confirmed

There’s nothing much to say here given that I’ve posted the HTC Droid Incredible specs nealy one week ago when the handset’s manual leaked. But just incase you doubted the authenticity Verizon just posted exactly the same thing on the Droid Incredible product page here. This Incredible looks like it features the exact same 8Mpix camera and Chipset as the HTC EVO 4G but it looks like HTC is crippling the device by not enabeling 720P video encoding again…btw where’s the promised Divx/720P update for the HTC Desire ?
