Motorola Droid X update coming, handsets out-of-stock

Motorola tried to anticipate the success of its newly released flagship device but this didn’t seem to work quite well. The DroidX is currently out-of-stock in many retail store and on Verizon’s online store. Current orders have a ten days delay and things aren’t looking like it’s going to change any time soon. On the other hand those who are lucky to have one should be happy to know that a software update is about to be pushed OTA starting tomorrow. Motorola Droid X finally available today alongside TV spot

If you weren’t lucky enough to receive one of the early Droid X shipped last week; today is you chance to finally get your hands on Motorola’s latest and greatest android smartphone. The Droid X is now available on Verizon‘s website for £199 with a 2 year contract or $269 with a 1 year Contract. Motorola has also launched a TV advertising campaign last night with a tv spot that you can watch after the break:

Motorola Droid X shipping early

A bunch of lucky Verizon users have just received their Motorola Droid X a full week before the official street day. The situation doesn’t seem to be really widespread so don’t get your hopes if you have ordered yours not long ago. The latest theory is that the lucky few are customers who originally ordered an HTC Incredible and later switched to a Droid X. So Verizon is apparently rewarding the patience with an early delivery.

Motorola Droid X review

The Engadget crew wrapped up the first Motorola Droid X review exactly two weeks because before retail launch of the device on July 15th. The review is principally a Droid X vs HTC EVO 4G comparison which is quite logical given that both device have nearly the same form factor and specifications. What comes out of it is that Motorola’s latest offering is probably the best Android handset to hit the market this summer but Samsung’s massive Galaxy S launch will probably overshadow it. Android 2.2 Froyo coming to Motorola Droid late July and Droid X in August

According the leaked picture above the official Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Motorola Droid is scheduled to be released in Late July while the Droid X will have to wait until August. The Motorola Droid X will initially ship with android 2.1 on July 15th but Motorola Droid users can already flash leaked Android 2.2 ROM on their rooted device if they are brave enough.

Motorola Droid X 720P video samples

720P video recording seems to be THE feature on all the latest high-end handsets launching this year. We’ve already seen the iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy S, HTC EVO 4G and Acer Stream but is time to see how the Droid X gets the job done. The videos posted below were all shot with the current rom (which probably isn’t final yet) and looks fairly good IMO (better than the EVO 4G and Acer Stream but with same nasty pink spot in the middle..).

Motorola Droid X hands-on video

Here’s an extensive hands-on video of the Motorola Droid X shot during the launch event. The build quality seems too be really good and the screen is definitely better than the one found on the HTC HD2 and HTC EVO 4G (the Droid X’s screen has a higher PPI thanks to the 854×480 resolution and an IPS panel resulting in better viewing angles and contrast). The new MotoBlur UI doesn’t look too fancy and gets the job done IMO. Check out the video after the break (btw, the clicking sound that you will hear throughout the video isn’t coming from the handset but from the Autofocus of the DSLR camera recording the video…).

iPhone 4 vs Motorola Droid X size comparison

The Engadget team has juts posted a quick size comparison between the iPhone 4 and the recently announced Motorola Droid X. With it’s massive 4.3″ screen the Motorola Droid X obviously dwarfs the sleek looking iPhone 4. Interestingly the Droid X is nearly as thin as the iPhone 4 but gets thicker at the top because of the camera and dual LED flash. It would be interesting to hear the what it feels like to use the Droid X on a daily basis given that I already find that the HTC HD2 is too big and hard to use with one hand (the Droid X is larger than both the HD2 and HTC EVO 4G!).

Motorola Droid X officially announced: Shipping July 15th for 199$

Motorola is currently holding a press conference in San Frasicsco for the launch of the Motorola Droid X smartphone. The device will officially start shipping on July 15th for $199 with contract (and after a $100 mail in rebate). Unfortunately the Droid X will ship with Android 2.1 and not 2.2. The Froyo update (which includes Flash 10.1 support) is said to be coming later this summer. On the hardware side of things, there nothing we really didn’t already know know thanks to the numerous leaks since May. The Motorola Droid X packs a TI OMAP 3630 chipset clocked at 1GHz, a 4.3″ 854×480 capacitive touchscreen (but the device is physically bigger that the HTC EVO 4G and HTC HD2), 8gb of local storage (and Micro-SD expansion slot and a 16gb micro-sd card will be offered in the box), an 8Mpx camera with Dual LED flash capable of 720P video recording, HDMI out, aGPS, Wifi, Bluetooth, DNLA support, Wifi tethering, 3 microphones for noise cancelation and will come preloaded with the Swype on-screen keyboard (the regular keyboard also support multi-touch).

The Motorola Droid X shows up on Verizon’s website

The Motorola Droid X announcement shouldn’t be too far away (the latest rumor points to a June 23 event) now that the device has finally shown its face on Verzion’s website ass seen in the screenshot above. There isn’t much else to say here other than wait patiently fro the official unveiling of the 4.4″ screen monster.

Early Motorola Droid X preview

The gals at Engadget managed to get their hands-on on a Motorola Droid X and posted a preview of the device.The device definitely looks like a beast even next to the HTC EVO 4G. But according to the preview it has a 4.4″ screen with a resolution of 854×480 (compared to a the WVGA 4.3″ on the EVO and HD2) so the Droid X has a higher PPI than HTC’s latest and greatest. Under hood is apparently a TI OMAP 9630 clocked @ 1Ghz next to 8Gb of flash memory and as we have sen earlier the handset packs an 8 Mpix camera with Xenon flash capable of capturing 720P videos that can then be outputted via the HDMI connector on the side of the device. Based on the pictures aand HD video sample posted the camera (or the software/drivers behind..) of the Droid X is also better than the one found on the HTC EVO 4G. Android 2.1 is running the show with a little help from Moto’s updated MOTOBLUR UI (oh and the keyboard now features multi-touch! And Swype comes pre-loaded on the device too). Motorola Droid X vs HTC EVO 4G vs iPhone and Droid Eris size comparison pictures

One more Droid X leak for the weekend. This time we have two pictures showing the Motorola Droid X vs the HTC EVO 4G an iPhone followed by another one showing the Droid X alongside the HTC Droid Eris. As you have probably already noticed the Motorola Droid X is a tiny bit larger than the HTC EVO 4G! This could be a problem IMO. I firmly believe that the size of the EVO (and HD2) is already a bit too much (it’s a pain to use with one hand).

Motorola Droid X aka Motorola Shadow specifications in the wild

Another day and another Motorola leak… This time it’s the Motorola Shadow which will apparently be named the Motorola Droid X (Motorola Droid eXtreme?). According to what is being said the Motorola Droid X will feature a 4.3″ capacitive LCD screen (similar to the HTC HD2 and HTC EVO 4G) a TI OMAP 3630 chipset clocked at 720Mhz ( or a 3440 or a Qualcomm SnapDragon..there seems to be some confusion here), an HDMI output (that you can see pictured above) and an 8Mpix camera capable of 720P recording similar to the Motorola XT720 (I guess that it also has a Xenon Flash too). The device also runs Android 2.1 with an updated version of the MotoBlur UI.
