Try Android 2.0.1 on your Windows Mobile device

Thanks to the chefs at XDA you can now try Android 2.0.1 (Eclair) on your HTC Touch HD, TouchPro 2 or Touch Diamond 2. Android is basically running on WinMo through an emulator this means that a lot of functionalities currently don’t work (like WiFi, Phone etc) but the performance is quite good for what it is. Just hit the links below to grab the files:

Touch Pro2 (v1.6)
Touch Diamond2
Touch HD
Instructions:

1. Download the files and put them on a storage card on your device
2. Run Haret.exe, and wait about five minutes

Pocketnow did a short video of the whole thing running on an HTC Touch Diamond2:

HTC Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 receive handwriting recognition update

HTC Support
HTC has just posted a Handwritting recognition update for the Diamond2 a Touch Pro2 smartphones:

This update for HTC Touch Diamond2 lets you write the way you want to. Now in addition to the full QWERTY keypad, simulating a full physical keyboard experience, HTC Touch Diamond2 now offers handwriting recognition to give you more flexibility to send messages to your loved ones.

Installation Instructions:

Note: AP version control -> The criterion will pass if the Touch Input for Pocket is equal to Version 2.1 (Build1919.1320), or lower.

I didn’t even know that this feature wasn’t even available on those 2 devices. What’s up with that?

AT&T HTC Pure review

AT&T HTC Pure
Adam over at Pocketnow has just finished his HTC Pure review. As you already know the Pure is AT&T’s version of the HTC Diamond2 which has been available in Europe/Asia since May/June, the only difference being that the Pure ships with Windows Mobile 6.5 on board. Here’s the conclusion:

OVERALL IMPRESSION
The Pure is a great device for a number of reasons, but doesn’t really offer anything outstandingly new… other than Windows Mobile 6.5. It’s not smaller or thinner than the original Touch Diamond. It doesn’t bring anything innovative like the Verizon Imagio’s FLO TV network. It doesn’t have a fantastic keyboard or cool speakerphone/conference calling features like the Touch Pro2. The camera is a higher resolution 5MP, but the sensor is small and grainy with low image quality just like on all other cell phone cameras.

Overall, I’m not terribly impressed with the Pure. However, for $150, it is a pretty good price for a solid Windows Phone on AT&T.

Now if you are not stuck on AT&T I would suggest you to get yourself an HTC Hero (it’s got nearly similar specs but runs Android) or wait for the Motorola Droid on Verizon or the HTC HD2 in Q1 2010. I must admit that it’s hard to get excited about a Windows Mobile smartphone after seeing the HD2 especially when we know that it will probably be upgradable to Windows Mobile 7 (the HTC Pure will not so you will be stuck with WM6.5.x).

HTC confirms Diamond2, Touch Pro2 & Snap WM 6.5 update with new and improved TouchFLO UI

htc
According to the German boys at AreaMobile, HTC has confirmed that the Diamond 2, Touch Pro2 & Snap will get a free upgrade to WM 6.5 and new  TouchFLO UI (probably the same as the one seen in the leaked roms here). What I wonder now is, if does devices (TP2 & Diamond2) get the new TouchFLO UI what are the Leo & Firestone going to bring to the table besides improved hardware ?
