The first Motorola Droid 2 review has arrived courtesy of Engadget and it looks like Motorola’s latest and greatest didn’t really impress. The review notes that the Droid 2 doesn’t bring anything new to the table given its similar design to the original (with a slightly improved keyboard) and the fact that the stock Android 2.2 UI has been replaced with Moto’s soon to be defunct MOTOBLUR. It will definitely be wiser to get a Droid X instead justfor the improved camera (and 720P video recording) and the bigger screen. Owners of the original Droid have no reason at all to run to their local Verizon store and grab the Droid 2 unless they think that synthetic benchmark results are super important…

Can’t wait until August 23? Well here’s your chance to grab the Motorola Droid 2 User Manual / guide nearly one month in advance. Nothing to fancy in there given that the Droid 2 will be running similar software to the Droid X (but apparently with Android 2.2). So if you have time to waste just hit the link below and grab the pdf.

Nothing confirmed yet but according to Engadget a Star Wars edition of the upcoming Motorola Droid 2 with a white R2-D2 on the back will be unveiled on August 12th exactly 11 days before the official retail launch. People outside of the US may not no this but the word “Droid” is a trademark of LucasFilm and Motorola had to license the name last year (that’s why it’s called the Motorola Milestone outside of North America).
The Motorola Droid 2 shots above are apparently locled in the source code of the Droid Does teaer site. Nothing to really get excited about given that we have already seen the Motorola Droid 2 live several times in the past few weeks but this is a sign that the handset is proably on the verge of being launched. The latest rumors are pointing at an August 23rd retail launch with Android 2.2 on board.

The latest rumors are pointing at an August 23rd launch of the Motorola Droid 2 with Android 2.2 on board. As we have seen a few days ago the current handsets are still running Android 2.1 but with the expected July launch of the Froyo update for the Motorola Droid it’s only logical to think that the lastest Moto hardware will be up to date when coming out the gate.
The closer we get to the official launch the more info we get about the Motorola Droid 2. Android and Me has wrapped up a quick hands-on preview of the device and a couple benchmarks comparing the performances of the Motorola Droid 2 vs Motorola Droid. On the GPU side you can see that the Droid 2 is far ahead of the original Droid thanks to its 1ghz TI OMAP 3630 (which packs a the same PowerVR SGX530 GPU as the 500 Mhz TI OMAP 3430 in the Droid):

A Gizmodo reader had the chance to get some hands-on action with the upcoming Motorola Droid 2
this week and sent out his first impressions. According to what he saw there’s nothing mind blowing with the device which definitely feels like a updated version of the original Droid launch last year. Also the Verizon rep who was with him confirmed that the handset will probably ship with Android 2.2
/ Froyo on board. Check out the full impressions after the break:

Members of the press have just received an invitation to a Motorola and Verizon launch event taking place on June 23. Titled “Unleashing the Next Generation of Droid” I cn only assume that this will be the official unveiling of the new Motorola Droid 2 and Motorola Droid X handsets that we have seen a lot lately.
The Motorola Droid 2 and Droid X info keeps on coming these days. this time we are getting some info on both handset’s marketing campaigns thanks to a few leaked documents detailing Motorola’s plans. One interesting bit that comes out of it is that the Motorola Droid 2 will be apparently clocked at 1 Ghz (TI OMAP 3630) and not 720MHz as previously rumored. Check out the rest of the docs after the break:

According to BGR’s sources, the Motorola Shadow aka Droid X is scheduled to launch in July on Verizon with Android 2.1on board and the Motoblur UI. The Motorola Droid 2 is also launching on Verizon but in August with Android 2.2 / Froyo. Both devices will feature a TI OMAP 3630 chipset. Like I said a few days ago, this summer is going to be all about Android!
Looks like we finally know everything about the Motorola Droid 2
, thanks to a new leak that reveals the final specifications of the handset and a short video of the device in action (the boot up sequence). Let’s start with the Droid 2 specifications:
-750MHz OMAP processor
-8GB SD card preinstalled
-New version of Motoblur
-No HDMI port
-No front facing camera
It’s unfortunate to see that the Motorola Droid 2 lacks an HDMI port even though it has nearly the same specifications as the Motorola ROI aka Motorola XT720 which features the same TI OMAP 3440 coupled with an 8 Mpix camera capable of shooting 720P videos. Check out the video after the break:

Several pictures of what looks like the Motorola Droid 2 have popped up on the net lately. As you can (barely) see the new A995 model looks a whole lot like the original Droid released last year. There’s still no confirmation but it seems like the device is already in Verizon‘s inventory (third picture). With the Shadow also making the rounds lately Motorola is set to have a busy summer season.
