Updated Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7 released

Microsoft has just released an updated version of the Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7. Unfortunately PubCenter is still only available to US residents. Contrary to what I thought earlier this month it is not yet open to developers worldwide but only to advertiser which can now sell ads via Adcenter. Anyway, here’s what new in the June SDK:

- Streamlined Ad Control APIs make common tasks simpler. For example, the Ad Control will now automatically collapse itself when no ad is available; this previously this required custom code.
- Added support for ads that link to Windows Phone Marketplace. Stay tuned for news on how you’ll soon be able to promote your app by advertising in other Windows Phone apps.
- The Ad Control is now automatically available in the Visual Studio 2010 toolbox.
- Ad requests over SSL for better end-user privacy.
- Numerous bugs fixes and stability improvements.

Microsoft Advertising for Windows Phone 7 now available worldwide

Finally! Microsoft has announced today prior to the opening of the Cannes Lion festival that Microsoft Advertising Exchange for Mobile is now available globally (it was restricted to the US Only). This means that Windows Phone 7 developers from around the world can now used Microsoft’s in-app adverts to monetize their applications. Microsoft is also opening its Microsoft Advertising Exchange RTB in the UK and Netherlands with Canada, France and Germany in the coming months. Check out the full press release after the break:

Third Windows Phone 7 TV Ad released: Where the heck is Zune?

Microsoft released a third Windows Phone 7 ad focused around the Samsung Focus (pun intended..) which is identical to the first one but with a different voice over. Anyway, what really struck me is that in all of the three adds recently released there isn’t a single mention of Zune or the Music services & capabilities associated to the platform. Microsoft can denied it as much as they want but something is definitely going on with Zune (rebrand?). Video after the break:

Another nice looking Windows Phone 7 TV ad for the Samsung Focus

Looks like Microsoft is finally getting things done the right way. A follow up to the previous Samsung Focus TV ad has just be released on the company’s official YouTube channel. No more awkward” really?”  stuff in there. Just the device and OS in action. Always let the product speak of itself.. Check it out after the break:

Fan made Windows Phone 7 ad looks nicer than Microsoft’s

Windows phone 7′s marketing and ad campaign clearly isn’t the best thing around (besides the latest Samsung Focus TV ad released last week). So anything kinda new and flashy is bound catch potential (young) consumers interest. Fortunately for Microsoft there are some dedicated and skilled WP7 fans out there like Brando Foy who just completed a 50 seconds long ad that looks pretty good IMO. Check it out after the break:

Finally a Windows Phone 7 TV ad that doesn’t suck

You all probably know by now that I’m far from being a fan of Microsoft’s current Windows Phone 7 marketing campaign. Unfortunately the company doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to come up with something fresh and new right now but AT&T and Samsung did grace us with a short TV ad that flashy and that shows the product and it’s third-party applications (update: This new ad is apparently part of Microsoft’s new Marketing push in the US as they are now sending links to it to the press and also WP7 users). What do you guys (and gals?) think about it? It this how Microsoft should advertise the product or did you really think that the “Really?” ad campaign was good enough? Check out the Samsung Focus ad after the break:

New Windows Phone 7 TV ads show Bing integration

Here are two new Windows Phone 7 TV ads that are going to air tonight and tomorrow night on UK’s Channel 4 which are part of a Microsoft Bing advertising camaign forthis Christmas. Both ads show the Bing search capabilities of the device similar to what was shown in the newest US TV ad last week. Check them out after the break:

Latest Windows Phone 7 TV ad finally shows something worth talking about

You all probably already know that I’m not really fond of Microsoft’s Marketing team…Anyway, they have released a new Windows Phone 7 TV ad that finally shows something worth talking about: Speech Recognition associated with Bing (powered by Tellme). Ironically I demoed the same features to a somebody last week and totally blew his mind with it (I showed him the real-time flight status search using Tellme. But you know what was sad about that? The person’s brother (who lives with him) has a Windows Phone 7 device since launch (Optimus 7) and didn’t even know that long pressing on the home button activates the speech recognition feature! That’s how bad Microsoft’s WP7 marketing is (hey maybe somebody up there should hire me to run their worldwide ad campaign? no? oh well…). Check out the ad after the break:

Microsoft allows developers to include advertising in their Windows Phone 7 XNA games

Just a few hours ago I was wondering on Twitter when Microsoft will allow non US residents to use the PubCenter ad control in their Windows Phone 7 applications (just like regular PubCenter for websites, the service is only availalbe to US Residents). Unforturnitely there’s still nothing new on this front but Microsoft has just announced an update to the Windows Phone 7 Advertising SDK that allows US develepers to included text based or image ads in their XNA applications / Games:

Today, Microsoft Advertising is excited to release an update to the Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7 that allows ad-enabled mobile gaming applications. The announcement makes it easy for mobile gaming developers to integrate banner or text ads into their Windows Phone 7 gaming apps via the XNA Framework while leveraging game-specific features like 3D graphics support, multiple graphic blend modes, built-in game loop and much more.

Windows Phone 7 TV ads: What do you think?

You’ve probably already seen them by now but a thought that after posting LG’s Ads it would be logical to also post Microsoft’s official Windows Phone 7 TV Ads. It’s refreshing to see that the guys in Redmond have out-done themselves this time around and didn’t pump-up (or actually give the green light) to a shitty ad campaign similar to last year’s Windows Mobile 6.5 spots. I just hope that other ads will see the light and show the actual product in action (similar to what Apple does). Videos after the break:

Microsoft Advertising opened for Windows Phone 7 application registrations

As is was previously announced Microsoft is officially enabling US only Windows Phone 7 applications developers to register their apps if they wish to monetize them through Microsoft’s PubCenter (using the SDK released 2 weeks ago). Unfortunately this only applies to US residents so the vast majority will have to rely on Google’s Mobile Adsense or Admob advertising platform. More info after the break:

Windows Phone 7 in-application ads using Microsoft Advertising are currently restricted to US Residents

Bad news for all non-US developers who wished to use the recently released Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7. Acording to the official FAQ only Developers living in the US are currently allowed to use Microsoft’s Advertising (PubCenter) in there applications:

Q- Can any developer participate?
A- Currently, only U.S.-based developers or international developers with a legal US business entity with a US tax identification number are supported. Additional international support coming soon.

Microsoft releases Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7

This came out of nowhere. While everybody was waiting for the Final Windows Phone 7 SDK ,Microsoft has silently released an Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7 which will help developers monetize their applications:

Increase your application revenues with the new Microsoft Advertising SDK for Windows Phone 7. The SDK allow easy integration of text and banner ads into your application, and consumes ads served by Microsoft’s mobile Ad Exchange, the first bidded ad exchange for mobile. The exchange includes multiple advertiser sales channels competing in real-time to purchase your ad inventory, incuding Microsoft’s national sales force and adCenter’s significant market footprint. Microsoft’s best-in-class ad targeting solution means better click through rates and better monetization, and the new SDK is integrated with Microsoft pubCenter to give you actionable reporting of how ads are performing in your applications

New Windows Phone 7 presentation Keynote: Advertising, Voice Activated search

Here’s an interesting Windows Phone 7 presentation that took place today during the Cannes Lions Festival in Fance. First off you will notice that Microsoft‘s Senior VP of Marketing, Mich Mathews announces that WP7 will launch in October..take this with a grain of salt thought as nothing has officially been said other than “in times for the holidays”. You will then see Microsoft’s GM, Kostas Mallios demonstrates how Windows Phone 7 can be used as an advertising platform. There’s a couple of interesting bits in his demo starting with the fact that voice activated search seems to work perfectly in Bing. Kostas also demonstrates that users will be able to download applications directly from the web through secure links that go straight to the application on the Marketplace (similar to the iPhone and android) and the ability for advertisers (and basically all third-party developers) to analyse the application’s usage and push down notifications to the phone to remind the user about it it (this is not the default behaviour of the app, users will obviously be able to opt-in or out of push notifications for every app). Check out the 8mins video after the break:

Chevrolet and Microsoft announce multi-screen advertising campaing including Windows Phone 7 and Kinect for Xbox 360

Today at the 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival Chevrolet and Microsoft Advertising are announcing a multi-screen advertising campaign that incorportes Windows Phone 7 and the newly announced Kinect XBOX 360 controler to promote the Chevrolet Volt electric car launch later this year. I highly suggest you take a look at this document (PDF) detailing Microsoft’s advertising strategy. Check out the full Press Release below folowwed by a short video of the event after the break:

PARIS, REDMOND, Wash., and DETROIT – 22 June, 2010

Chevrolet and Microsoft Advertising demonstrated at the 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival today an example of the first multiscreen advertising campaign that incorporates Kinect for Xbox 360 as a way to promote the Chevrolet Volt electric car launch later this year. Formerly called “Project Natal,” Kinect for Xbox 360 delivers a whole new way to play, with controller-free games and entertainment. For advertisers, it provides an innovative way to connect with consumers by enabling them to physically explore and engage with a brand through voice and gesture.

When Kinect for Xbox 360 launches this fall, consumers will have the opportunity to take the test-drive concept to a new level by driving a Chevrolet Volt in “Kinect Joy Ride,” the first controller-free racing game from Microsoft Game Studios. After viewing the video advertisement in-dash on Xbox LIVE or on the Web, consumers will be able to unlock the Chevrolet Volt in “Kinect Joy Ride” to actually drive the car in the game.

Kinect for Xbox 360 opens a new world of controller-free games and entertainment. A special sensor recognizes players and responds to their movements and gestures. Kinect can also take pictures during gameplay, which players will be able to upload to their favorite social sites when the game ends.

“The Volt applies advanced environmental technology to give Chevrolet drivers freedom from the gas pump, making it one of the most exciting developments the automotive industry has seen in years,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “Our marketing campaign needs to reflect this. Kinect allows us to bring the excitement of the showroom to the living rooms of our customers. It’s a way for us to replicate the experience of physically engaging with a product that is essential to the customer’s purchasing decision.”

The demonstration of the potential Chevrolet Volt campaign shown at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival today illustrates a number of innovative ways that brands can connect with consumers through touch and gesture on the PC, TV and mobile device. One proof of concept being explored involves a mobile brand experience, in which consumers can add a local Chevrolet promotion event to their calendar to go test-drive a Volt or use voice-enabled search on Bing to find locations near them. Chevrolet will be the first auto marketer to incorporate a branded advertising experience for the new Windows Phone 7.

Another proof-of-concept technology being shown is Microsoft’s Pivot technology, a feature designed to provide consumers with a quick way to explore, organize and visualize large amounts of data and make it more useful. It works by utilizing Deep Zoom technology (built into Microsoft Silverlight), which manipulates a vast array of items at once, all in high resolution, allowing consumers to zoom in and out of content on the screen. For instance, consumers could zoom in to see a close-up of the Volt exterior and interior features without having to flip between pages.

Windows Phone 7 Series advertising campaign

Mary Jo Foley is reporting some relativily interesting info about Microsoft’s futur Natal, Office, Windows Phone ad campaigns which should start in the coming months. When asked about Windows Phone 7, David Webster ( chief strategy officer in Microsoft’s central marketing group ) said that the product planning teams and the marketing teams have been working side by side “to devise the “story telling” for that product from the very start”.

Microsoft wants the new phone ads to attract customers who may never have used (or didn’t realize they were using) a Windows Mobile phone. “The ‘people’ focus was a big part of the (Windows 7) branding” and will be a continued emphasis for Windows Phone 7, Webster said.

The messaging “needs to reflect customers we have and customers we don’t,” he said. It also needs to explain why Microsoft is opting for a different phone model with elements like hubs and Live Tiles, instead of the app-centric approach of its competitors, Webster said. Windows Phone 7 also is the perfect vehicle for Microsoft to highlight the interdependence and convergence of different Microsoft brands and technologies, since Windows Phone 7 devices will be running Bing, Office Mobile, Zune services, Internet Explorer, and Windows Live, Webster pointed out.

Smartphones are a lot like search, Webster said, in that users, when asked, say they are mostly satisfied with their phones but then actually have a litany of complaints (like they don’t like having to come in and out of six different apps to perform a particular task). Other phone vendors are locked into certain models and messages, he said. “They’re solving for a problem from four years ago,” he said. Microsoft has the advantage of being able to come in with a new model and message because it is basically starting over with Windows Phone 7.

I’ve never been a big fan of Microsoft’s advertising camaings (onther that XBOX related ones) especially the latest Windows Phone ads… The latest WP7 promo ad launched at MIX is a good start though…

HTC Globally Launches “Quietly Brilliant” Advertising Campaign today

HTC-You
We’ve already talked about HTC’s advertising a campaing a few days ago. But HTC is today officialy taking it a step further by launching it globaly and also airing TV ads:

TAOYUAN, Taiwan – October 26, 2009 – HTC Corporation, a global smartphone designer, today unveiled a global advertising campaign that is based on HTC’s new “Quietly Brilliant” brand positioning. As HTC’s first global advertising campaign, the YOU campaign is being rolled out across 20 countries in the coming weeks and features the tagline, “You don’t need to get a phone. You need a phone that gets you.” This represents HTC’s commitment to focus on people, their needs and how they work and live to ensure that HTC devices suit them.

“‘Quietly Brilliant’ is doing great things in a humble way, with the belief that the best things in life can only be experienced, not explained,” said John Wang, chief marketing officer, HTC Corporation. “The YOU campaign is the perfect embodiment of ‘Quietly Brilliant’ and is core to HTC as a company, innovator and partner.“

The YOU campaign is focused on driving broad, global visibility and understanding of HTC’s unique brand promise – that it’s all about YOU, the consumer, and in fact not the device. HTC worked with Los Angeles-based advertising agency, Deutsch LA Inc. to create the YOU campaign that will employ an integrated-media approach to reach consumers via television, print, outdoor and online. HTC’s design expertise will be echoed throughout the campaign, with commercial spots highlighting the unique functionality of HTC smartphones.

“We’ve come to have a very emotional relationship with our phones. Many of our key experiences in any given day come through this one device and yet most of the advertising in the category is still about utility,” says Eric Hirshberg, co-CEO and chief creative officer, Deutsch LA.

“HTC’s whole design philosophy is very personal. They make phones where your experience is completely unique, so we think there is a connection between how people feel about their phones and how HTC makes them.”

HTC worked with London-based creative consultancy, FigTree to create the “Quietly Brilliant” brand positioning. The “Quietly Brilliant” positioning was inspired by HTC’s culture of putting customers first, born from a heritage of creating breakthrough products and continued innovation. As part of HTC’s culture, the “Quietly Brilliant” positioning will be rolled out in all forms of communication and brand touch points across the company.

“Some of life’s most brilliant ideas started with a simple doodle on the back of a napkin,” said Simon Myers, CEO of Figtree. “HTC’s new look uses this visual language of doodles to explain all the quietly brilliant features and benefits of HTC devices in a simple and human way.”

The You campaing will appear in the form of bus wraps, online banners, and television commercials:

“You Are Different From You” TV Spot :

TV Spot 2:

So far only the Sprint HTC Hero is shown in the TV Spots but the campaign will feature multiple phones across carriers and platforms. Hopefully we will get to see some Windows Mobile action in the future (on the HD2!).

HTC launchs US advertising campaign & is Quietly Brilliant

HTC Quietly Brilliant
As it was announced a few months ago, HTC is launching a $50M advertising campaign in the United States today. The first signs can already be seen on HTC’s US website which now sports a totaly new design (new web ads are also starting to appear in google adsense):
HTC You
The company has also changed its name from “HTC Innovation” to “HTC Quietly Brilliant” but this may apply to the US market only (as it wouldn’t make any sense in other countries worldwide).
