Nokia Lumia 920 PureView and Lumia 820 renders and photos leaked

Can’t wait until September 5th to see what Nokia is cooking? Well, here are the first renders and pictures of two Windows Phone 8 handsets that NOkia is supposedly going to unveil next week. The first one seen above is the Nokia Lumia 920 PureView high-end WP8 devices which is said to sport a 4.5″ screen and a PureView camera (but don’t expect a 41Mp sensor like the Nokia 808). Screen resolution is not know but I would be surprised if it was 1280×768 instead of 720P. This the increased width could be used for added on screen buttons which could be especially useful in camera mode to make full use of the PureView technology.

Windows Phone 8 launching October 29th

Nothing is official yet but according to Mary Joe Foley’s own sources Microsoft is set to commercially launch Windows Phone 8 on October 29th just three days after Windows 8. Technically we may have to wait a few more days after the launch event until we start to see the first Windows Phone 8 devices hit retail and carrier stores around the world. Remember that MJ’s sources are often right so October 29th may very well be the real deal.

Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 announced

Samsung is officially the first out of the gate with it’s Windows Phone 8 handset announcement today at IFA in Berlin.  The Samsung ATIV S (also known as the SGH-T899) is the first Windows Phone 8 phone to be publicly unveiled and sure enough it doesn’t disappointed as this is essentially the WP8 version of the current best Android handsets, the Galaxy SII. The hardware is for the most part identical to the US LTE variant of the SII so you will find a gigantic 4.8″ HD Super AMOLED (720P) display powered by a Qualcomm S4 Plus SOC clocked at 1.5Ghz (with the Adreno 225 GPU), 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal memory, Micro-SD expansion Slot, NFC, an 8Mpix rear facing camera and a 1.9 FF cam. All in a 8.7mm thick package. Last but not least, the Samsung ATIV S will pack a relatively generous 2300Mha battery. Check out more pictures after the break:

Unity 3D Engine support for Windows Phone 8 announced

Unsurprisingly Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason announced today during the Unity 2012 conference in Amsterdam that the famed Unity 3D engine is will now support Windows Phone 8 thanks to its shared Kernel/Core with Windows 8 and Direct3D support.

“The Unity community has been asking for access to Windows Phones and have been eagerly anticipating the release of Windows 8. We’re happy to announce that we will support both.”

We are undoubtedly going to see a many more similar announcement from other Engine companies now that we are getting closer to the OS’s launch. Epic Games are already expressed its support for Windows Phone 8 several weeks ago to a formal Unreal Engine Windows Phone 8 announcement should be too far off.

Nokia to announce it’s Windows Phone 8 handsets on September 5th

Nokia has just started to sent invitations to the US press for a September 5th launch event in New York City for what is expected to be the company’s unveiling of its Windows Phone 8 handsets (notice the WP8 start screen above..). Given that the event will start at 9:30 AM in NYC it’s safe to assume and similar launch events will take place in other regions at the same time (in the afternoon here in Europe). I will try to ping Nokia EU to see if there’s anything scheduled not far from me as I’m sure that you ‘ll can’t wait to see what the Finnish company has planned for WP8.

UPDATE: Nokia just told me that the there’s currently no other press event scheduled in other regions but that the NYC event will be streamed live on the web. Don’t forget to set your alarms and calendars.
