Samsung announcing new handsets on September 1st

HTC apparently isn’t the only handset manufacturer scheduled to unveil something on September 1st (the first day of the IFA convention in Berlin). Samsung has also launched a short video teasing campaign about the Samsung Unpacked event which is set to take place on this day. As you will see in the videos after the break the mysterious device is undoubtedly a phone but the OS is still a mystery (also the Bada and Android versions of the Samsung unpacked application are promoted at the very end). The waves and beach in the videos could also hint at the release of a new Samsung Wave / Bada phone too. Guessing is all we can do right now.

HTC to announce its new Windows Phone 7 Mango handsets on September 1st ?

HTC has recently announced a public event taking place in London September 1st title “Join Us To See What’s Next”. At first glance this may look like one more Android related gathering but Microsoft UK’s Facebook page has just recently been updated today with a mention of this same exact event. This obviously makes us all believe that Instead of and Android focus night party this one may very well be one of the first official unveiling of HTC’s new batch of Windows Phones running Mango which are still rumored to be the MSM7230 powered HTC Ignite, HTC Prime and MSM8255 powered HTC Eternity.

Fujitsu IS12T benchmark shows the Adreno 205 GPU crushing the Adreno 200

A recent Fujitsu IS12T benchmark run with the recently released WP Bench 2.0 application confirms what I’ve just talked about in my previous post about Hydro Thunder Go and the current Adreno 200 GPU embedded in the first generation of Windows Phone 7 devices. As you can see above the GPU score on the MSM8655 powered Fujitsu handset is 40FPS compared to only 19FPS on all other WP7 devices to date thanks to the new Adreno 205 GPU. You will also note that CPU performance is logically nearly identical to the QSD8250 because both SoC have essentially the same CPU.

Latest Hydro Thunder Go update greatly improves performance

As I tweeted on Saturday night the latest version of Hydro Thunder Go for Windows Phone 7 greatly improves the games performance which was previously suffering from sever framerate dips during busy races. The game is still being render at sub-WVGA resolution (400×240 instead of 800×480) but this is unfortunately caused by the Adreno 200 GPU which isn’t capable of handling what’s being rendered on the screen at the device’s native resolution (the water’s real-time environmental reflections is most probably the killer here). Thankfully the next batch of Windows Phone handsets which are set be released in the coming months will all include the more powerful Adreno 205 GPU but even then it will be up to developers to decide if it’s going to be worth targeting this GPU instead of the old one given the current install base.
