Sharing Music and Videos with Messenger in Windows Phone 7 Mango

Here’s a Mango feature that I wasn’t aware off: Music and Video sharing via Messenger. As you probably already know the Messenger integration in the Windows Phone 7 Mango (build 7712) allows you to share pictures with your chat buddies but what you may not know (and I personally didn’t, so thanks to Nathaniel for giving me the heads up on this one) is that you can share music files (wma/mp3) and videos files (wmw/mp4) from a PC to a windows Phone on Messenger. As you will see in the video demo I shot below the files are downloaded to the phone and can then be played back from there. They are unfortunately not saved to the Music & Video hub so you will only show up in their respective Messenger thread (they will be gone from your phone when you delete the conversation thread. Video after the break:

Windows Phone 7.10.8200 build spotted

There’s apparently a 7.10.8200 build of Windows Phone which was recently spotted by the “Dude, where’s my update?” application (Mango RTM is 7.10.7720). Nothing surprising here given that Microsoft is constantly working on the OS and has several branches in parallel. Some are speculating that this may be the rumored Tango release/update but once again nothing is certain especially when you remember that the Tango name originated on Digitimes which has one of the worst track records when it comes Windows Phone related rumors (and Apple too..). I have yet to be able to confirm the Tango codename and the only upcoming update that we currently know about is Apollo which is scheduled to ship in more that 14 months. This is not to say that their won’t be updates between Mango and Apollo but the code name and content of those releases are still a mystery.

Windows Phone 7 Mango RTM build 7720 already in the hands of hackers

The famous Chinese DFT Team hackers have once again gotten their hands on some juicy bits earlier than everybody else. As seen in the picture above they have the RTM 7720 Mango build already up and running on an HTC HD7 just a few days after the bits where sent to OEMs. This shouldn’t come as a surprise given that they also had Mango build in the possession early on and are the guys behind the HTC HD2 port of WP7. From the looks of it their must have some close “friends” at an OEM (If I had to guess I would say HTC..).
