Windows Phone Mango Beta thoughts and interesting bits

Microsoft has just updated the Mango dev Beta NDA terms a few minutes ago allowing developers to comment and talk publicly about it.

8. Confidentiality: By participating in this program, the developer agrees to not to share the ‘Mango’ pre-release device image, binary dumps, or the applications used to update to this pre-release image, with third parties.

So here are some of my findings after using it for more than 24 hours and frankly I’m surprised that some of these things haven’t been reported (unless I didn’t pay attention..) yet even in the “press reviews” given that I noticed a few of them only a few minutes after booting up Mango for the first time on the Samsung Omnia 7 :

1) Internet Explorer 9 Mobile now supports color dithering. So there’s no more banding seen in images.
2) Color Dithering is now applied through-out the OS so there’s no more banding on the Lock-screen images, Bing daily images, Music+Video hub background image and Picture hub background image.
3) Improved color dithering in the Zune video player (and also enable for the MediaElement control)
4) Shooting 720P videos is now smoother on the Omnia 7 (same on Focus I guess)
5) The Camera app doesn’t support touch focus as we know it. Touching the screen will only center focus and trigger the shutter, you can’t choose the focus location with your finger.
6) It’s now possible to download the images embedded in HTML emails when only connected to the cell network (pre-Mango it only worked on WiFi for me)
7) During a Live Messenger chat, only replies to messages sent from the phone are pushed to the phone. This means that if I type something on Messenger via the PC and the contact replies to it his message won’t arrive on the phone, but if I send a message via the phone then the subsequent answer will be pushed to the phone. This is IMO kinda dumb because the whole threaded conversion found the phone will be missing some messages (thanks to M.J Foley for the help here :) ). This can change before RTM thought…
8 ) the Voice-to-text TellMe system for text messages and chat messaging apparently censors “bad words”: Pimps = ##&## etc..
9) Embedded Youtube videos now work when the phone is not set to US
10) Bing Voice search now works in other languages (French for example)

There’s still a lot to talk about but this is all for now and don’t forget to regularly check out my full list of Mango features which I update on a daily basis.

The banding on pictures is gone, yes, but you can still see it in apps. Try British Airways or Machinima. But at least they fixed it in pictures.

This is normal. the OS is using Direct3D to render the UI while the current 3rd party apps are in Silverlight 3 (restricted to 16bit right now) thus not affected by the Mango rom . But developers now have the option to force 32bit in the SL4 applications for Mango (16bit is still the default because forcing 32bit results in slower performance). We won’t see those apps until Mango officially launches this fall though.

I see, thanks for the clarification.

I don’t think it’s such a dumb idea. If I am firing away on a PC, it would bother me if every reply was sent to my phone sitting next to my PC monitor also. (I suspect MS would have been scolded even more if they did that.) What they should add is to route it to the phone when your PC IM status is “away” or if you explicitly configures it that way. That should keep everyone happy.

Another solution would be for conversations taken place on the PC to be “silently” pushed to the phone if configured this way.

For ex. if i call  - *444#    in shows me the account balance plus a number of items to choose from :

      1. Extra info  2. blablabla

But I can’t reply to this messages continue with operation like on other phones.  I have to call again like this  *444*1#

    Thanks

Are the french language specific problems solved? Like the unability to open embedded youtube videos from the browser for instance. And what about the local/ vocal search in french?

Samsung Omnia 720p capture is finally smoother :) Now you can safely call it the best ‘Win Phone’ Video Camera…the picture quality was always there…but the jittery/stuttery motion was a big let down.

Yup, but it’s still not perfectly smooth. Just a tad bit better :)

Hopefully….with further tweaking of Mango & a newer Sammy Firmware….it will further improve to a more acceptable level :)

How have most of the non-mango apps been in the Mango beta on the phone? Wondering if I should upgrade even though this is my only phone and I use it for more than development. Suggestion?

  • http://www.mobiletechworld.com MobileTechWorld

Panorama control have some touch issues (hard to pan left/right) when there are listbox controls in them (even though the scrolling is now perfectly smooth). Video playback in MediaElement controls is now HW accelerated but there are buffering issues (voice can sometimes be out of sync). Webbrowser control can also crash sometimes. Finally some apps just don’t work like the newly released NYT app. But nothing really major IMO. Mango is so much better and Nodo..

I may know that RTL (Arabic, Hebrew, etc..) are not supported in Mango, but by any chance or surprise, is it there in the Mango?

Nope it’s not in there unfortunately.
