Windows Phone 7 application loading performance update shown on video

Here’s a short video demonstrating the application loading speeding improvements that are part of the upcoming  Windows Phone 7 update that will be pushed out next months. You will see two Samsung Taylor developer handsets, one running the current retail 7.0.7004.0 OS version and one running an internal 7.0.7353.0 build which includes the speed improvement tweaks. Don’t expect any miracles thought because as of right now and Omnia 7 or even and LG Optimus7 which is the fastest WP7 device when it comes to loading applications, are as fast as the Samsung Taylor that supposedly has the improvement rom (I personally find it ridiculous that MS didn’t demo this one current retail devices instead..):

Keep in mind that these improvements only apply to applications that load their assets directly from the phone memory and not internet connected apps (like Twitter) which will remain super slow unless the developers update the code and implement better state management and tombstoning. The upcoming won’t include and IE Mobile speed improvements either.

But the performance boost should be relative to the taylor so the same amount of time should’nt be shaved off but the percentage of improvement should be the same or similar.

Yup, this is what we are all hoping for. The demo should have been done on a retail device IMO.

Do you think that the early february update is going to be bigger than what has been announced? Other than the performance increase, copy & paste, better marketplace search, and the obvious bug fixes(hopefully a long list of fixes, including saving the camera settings) do you think that other features will be added to this first update? Curiously on the update page site it states “Here’s a peek at SOME of what’s ahead” i’m assuming maybe not anything big but maybe small things like custom ringtones and such.

I think that the “some of what’s ahead” is a reference to what is coming in 2011 as a whole and not specifically the first update. Will the February update include things that have been talked about yet? Sure but nothing major IMO. One thing I am hooping for, which is really important, is that Microsoft doesn’t wait until the second update to provide some of the must need APIs that were not ready for launch (raw camera feed access, Digital Compass API, HLSL in XNA etc). Frankly there’s no need to speculate I think. Everything will be known in just a few weeks I and really hope that we won’t be (users and developers) disappointed. Microsoft will layout the WP7/8 road-map and make it clear that they are pushing hard behind the platform.
